Log

Adds the weekday and date to each row.

Known nights (optional)

These two lines are examples to replace or clear. Write each as bedtime, wake time. A wake time earlier than the bedtime means the next morning.

How to use the sleep log printable

      1. Enter how many nights the log should cover, and pick a first night if you want dates printed.
      2. If you already know some nights, type the bedtime and wake time, one night per line, such as 10:30 pm, 6:30 am.
      3. Choose 12 hour or 24 hour times, then check the preview and the totals under it.
      4. Press Download PDF or Print, and fill in the remaining rows by hand each morning.

How hours slept are worked out

For each night you type, the page subtracts the bedtime from the wake time. When the wake time is earlier on the clock than the bedtime, it counts the wake time as the next morning. Bed at 10:30 pm and up at 6:30 am is 8 hours, and 11:15 pm to 7:00 am is 7 hours 45 minutes.

The total line adds the nights you entered and gives the average, rounded to the nearest minute. Two nights of 8 hours and 7 hours 45 minutes total 15 hours 45 minutes, and the average is 7 hours 53 minutes. If you enter nothing, the totals line stays blank so you can add it up yourself.

      Filling in the log

Each row has columns for bedtime, wake time, hours slept, how rested you felt on a 1 to 5 scale and notes. The rested score is your own and has no standard meaning, so decide what 1 and 5 mean to you and keep it the same each day.

A log is easiest to keep when it sits next to the bed. Fill in the previous night each morning while you remember it. To check a single night on screen, use the Hours Slept Calculator, and to find bedtimes that match your wake time, try the Sleep Cycle Calculator.

      A record, not advice

The page keeps a record for you. It does not judge how much sleep is right and it is not medical advice. If you are worried about your sleep or how tired you feel, speak with a doctor.

      Assumptions and limits

      • A wake time at or before the bedtime on the clock is counted as the next morning.
      • A bedtime equal to the wake time is refused, because the length would be 0 or 24 hours.
      • The average is rounded to the nearest whole minute.
      • The page is a personal record and gives no health advice.

      Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate hours slept from bedtime and wake time?

Count from the bedtime to the wake time, adding 24 hours if the wake time is earlier on the clock. From 10:30 pm to 6:30 am that is 8 hours.

How many nights can I put on one log?

Up to 31 nights, spread across as many pages as needed. Seven nights fit comfortably on one page.

Can I use 24 hour times?

Yes. Pick 24 hour in the time format and the page prints 22:30 instead of 10:30 pm. You can type times in either style.

What is the rested column for?

It is a space for your own 1 to 5 score of how rested you feel in the morning. There is no standard scale, so decide what the numbers mean to you.
