How to use the password log book printable
- Give the log a title and choose how many lines per page, from 8 to 20.
- Keep Lettered sections ticked for eight sections (A-C through V-Z) with a letter guide at the top of each page, or untick it for a plain run of pages. Then choose the number of pages.
- Tick the recovery note column if you want room for a 2-step or recovery reminder instead of a general notes column.
- Check the preview, then Download PDF or Print. The pages are blank, and nothing you type is stored.
What each page has
Each page has a title, a safety note and a ruled table with four columns: site or app, username or email, password hint, and notes or date changed (or a recovery note). In the lettered version, a strip at the top lists the eight sections and fills in the one you are on, so you can find an entry the way you would find a name in an address book. A single section is 1 to 3 pages, and 8 sections of 1 page give 8 pages.
The footer reminds you not to share the page and to update it when you change a password.
Write hints, not passwords
A paper log is only as safe as the place you keep it. A hint, such as the first letters of a phrase only you know, is much less harmful if the sheet is lost than the password itself. Keep the finished log somewhere private and locked, and think about a password manager for the complete details. A paper copy can still be useful as an emergency backup for a short list of important accounts.
Use the password generator to create strong passwords and the password strength checker to judge them. A unique password for each account matters more than the log.
No data touches this page
Unlike other planners on this site, this one has no remember box and no text fields for accounts. The pages are blank and are made in your browser, and nothing is uploaded or stored. The title is the only thing you type. Print it, fill it in by hand and keep the paper safe.
Related sheets include the emergency contact sheet and the inventory list maker.
Assumptions and limits
- Pages are US Letter. A page has 8 to 20 ruled lines, and a plain log has 1 to 12 pages.
- Lettered sections are A-C, D-F, G-I, J-L, M-O, P-R, S-U and V-Z, with 1 to 3 pages each.
- The pages are blank. No account, username or password is stored or sent anywhere.
- A paper log can be lost or read by others, so keep it private. Nothing is uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
Should I write my passwords in a log book?
Safer is to write a hint instead of the password, keep the sheet somewhere private and locked, and consider a password manager. A paper log is best used as a short backup list.
How do the lettered sections work?
Eight sections group letters, A-C through V-Z. Each page highlights its own section in a strip at the top, so you can file an entry under the first letter of the site name.
Does this page store my accounts?
No. The page has no fields for accounts and no remember option. You print blank pages and write on them by hand.
How many entries can I print?
Up to 20 lines on each page, and up to 12 plain pages or 24 lettered pages. A lettered log with 14 lines and one page per section holds 112 entries.
