How to use the food journal printable

      1. Choose the number of days and how many entries each day has room for.
      2. Add a first day if you want the weekday and date printed on each block.
      3. Tick or clear the Amount and Notes columns.
      4. Press Download PDF or Print, and write in each meal and snack as you go.

How the pages are laid out

Each day gets its own block with a bar showing the day number and date, a row of column headings, and ruled rows to write in. Blocks are packed onto pages without being split, so a day is never cut in half by a page break. Five entries a day fit four days to a page, and a one week journal takes two pages.

More entries make taller blocks, so fewer days fit a page. At 12 entries a day, two days fit each page, and a two week journal takes seven pages. The note under the preview tells you how many days land on each page.

      Getting more from a journal

A journal works best when you write things down at the time you eat, not at the end of the day. Use the time column to see when you eat, the food column for what and the amount column for how much, in whatever way you measure, such as cups, handfuls or pieces.

To plan ahead, try the Meal Planner Printable and the Grocery List Maker, and for drinks, the Water Intake Calculator. You can also keep a Body Measurement Tracker alongside it.

      A record, not advice

This page is a place for your own notes. It does not count calories, judge what you eat or give nutrition advice. If you have a medical condition or an eating concern, talk to a doctor or a registered dietitian about how to track your food.

      Assumptions and limits

      • Day blocks are never split across pages.
      • No calories or nutrition values are calculated.
      • Nothing you type is sent anywhere. The page is made in your browser.

      Frequently asked questions

How do I keep a food journal?

Write down what you eat and drink at the time you have it, with the time and the amount. A printed page with a block for each day makes that easy to do.

How many entries per day should I choose?

Five is a good start for three meals and two snacks. Choose more if you graze through the day or want room for drinks.

      Does the journal count calories?

No. It is a blank form for your notes. It does not look up foods or give any nutrition figures.

Can I print more than a week?

Yes, up to 14 days. The page splits the days across as many pages as it needs and never cuts a day in two.
