How to use the home inventory list maker

        1. Add one row for each item, or each group of identical items, with the room, the quantity and the value of one in dollars.
        2. Add notes such as a brand or a serial number, and optionally the owner, address and date at the top.
        3. Choose the order, whether to show values, and whether to add a summary by room. Add blank rows if you want to write more by hand.
        4. Check the totals, then download the PDF, print the list or save it as a CSV file.

How the totals are worked out

Each line's total is the quantity times the value of one, and the grand total adds every line. Amounts are held in whole cents, so $19.99 times 3 is exactly $59.97 and seven items at $0.10 come to $0.70. An item without a value counts as $0. The summary by room adds up the entries, the items and the value in each room.

With the four example rows, a television and a sofa in the living room and four chairs in the kitchen, the total is $450 plus $800 plus 4 times $60, which is $1,490.00. The living room is $1,250.00 and the kitchen is $240.00.

        Using the list

A written list of what you own is useful if you ever need to describe a loss to an insurer or compare what you have to your coverage. The values here are only the numbers you type, so they are not appraisals. Ask your insurer what proof it expects, such as receipts and photos, and keep your list and those photos somewhere other than your home, such as a cloud folder or with a relative.

Moving soon? The moving checklist generator and the moving boxes calculator pair well with an inventory, and the net worth calculator can use your totals.

        Where your list stays

The list is drawn in your browser. If you ask it to, the page remembers your entries on this device in local storage, and you can switch that off. The CSV download saves the list without any page branding so you can open it in a spreadsheet.

        Assumptions and limits

        • Values are numbers you enter in dollars, not appraisals.
        • Totals are added in whole cents. Quantities are whole numbers from 1 to 99,999.
        • Up to 300 items fit in one list.
        • Receipts, photos and proof of ownership are not part of this tool.

        Frequently asked questions

How do I make a home inventory list?

Walk through each room and list what you own with a quantity and a value. This tool adds the totals and prints the list, and you can save a copy as a CSV file.

        What value should I enter?

Use what it would cost to replace the item or another figure your insurer asks for. The tool uses whatever you type and does not look values up.

Can I keep the list private?

Yes. It is built in your browser and is not uploaded. If you choose to remember it, it is stored on this device only.

Can I print blank rows to fill in by hand?

Yes. Set the number of extra blank rows and they print at the end of the table.
