How to use the home maintenance checklist generator

      1. Tick the systems and features your home has: heating, air conditioning, gutters, a water heater tank, a fireplace, a sump pump, a pool, a septic system and so on.
      2. Add any tasks of your own, one per line, such as a landlord request or an item from a home inspection.
      3. Check the preview. Tasks are grouped as every month, spring, summer, fall, winter and once a year, and only the ones that apply to your home are listed.
      4. Press Download PDF or Print, and tick the boxes by hand through the year. Or press Download calendar file for repeating reminders.
      5. Tick Remember my entries in this browser to keep your choices for the next time you print an updated list.

      What is on the list

The tool holds 47 maintenance tasks. Twenty-three of them apply to every home, such as testing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, looking for leaks under sinks, checking caulk and weatherstripping, and reviewing insurance. The other 24 appear only when you tick a feature. A furnace adds a pre-season service and a filter check, gutters add two cleanings a year, a tank water heater adds a sediment flush, a fireplace adds a chimney inspection, and a pool adds opening and closing steps.

Seasonal grouping helps because many jobs depend on weather. Spring covers what winter may have damaged: gutters, roof, caulking, the sump pump and outdoor faucets. Summer is for pest checks, cleaning behind appliances and exterior paint. Fall prepares for cold: heating service, hoses and faucets, weatherstripping and the chimney. Winter is for ice dams, damp basements and keeping pipes from freezing.

      Calendar reminders

The calendar file holds six repeating all-day reminders instead of dozens of separate events. Monthly checks repeat on the 1st of each month, spring tasks every April 1, summer tasks every July 1, fall tasks every October 1, winter tasks every December 1 and yearly tasks every January 15. Each reminder lists the tasks that apply to your home in its notes. The first date is the next one on or after the day you download the file, so a file made on October 11, 2026 starts with November 1, 2026 for monthly checks and April 1, 2027 for spring.

The dates are defaults. After importing, you can move any reminder to a date that suits your climate, since spring arrives in different months in Florida and Minnesota. The file is made in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

      Safety and professional help

This is a reminder list, not an inspection or a safety standard. Follow the manuals for your equipment and your local rules. Work on gas appliances, chimneys, roofs, electrical panels and septic or well systems should be done by qualified professionals. Never climb on a wet or icy roof, and use a stable ladder with a helper for gutters. If an alarm sounds, a pipe leaks or you smell gas, treat it as an emergency and contact the proper service rather than waiting for the next checklist date.

      Assumptions and limits

      • The task list is general homeowner guidance. It is not a building code, a warranty requirement or a home inspection.
      • How often to service equipment varies by make, climate and use. Your equipment manual and local professionals take priority over this list.
      • Condos, apartments and rentals often have shared systems that a landlord or association maintains. Tick only what you are responsible for.
      • Seasons follow the Northern Hemisphere pattern and reminder dates are fixed defaults you can edit after importing.
      • Your choices are saved only if you tick the remember box, and then only in this browser.

      Frequently asked questions

How often should I test smoke alarms?

Monthly testing is the common recommendation, and the list includes it as a monthly task. Replace any alarm that is older than the age printed on its label, which is often ten years.

What should be on a fall home maintenance checklist?

Typical fall tasks are servicing the furnace, cleaning gutters after leaves drop, draining hoses and shutting off outdoor faucets, checking weatherstripping, and having a fireplace chimney inspected.

Can I get a calendar reminder for each task?

The calendar file groups tasks into six repeating reminders, each listing its tasks, so your calendar is not flooded. You can edit or split any reminder after importing it.

Why does my list have fewer tasks than another checklist?

This tool shows only tasks for systems you tick. Unticking a feature removes its tasks, which keeps the printout short and relevant to your home.

Does this replace a professional home inspection?

No. It reminds you of routine jobs. Inspectors and licensed trades look for hidden defects and handle gas, electrical, roof, chimney and septic work.

What should I read next after setting up a new home?

If you have just moved, see the moving checklist generator. To estimate running costs of appliances, use the electricity cost calculator.
