How to use the moving checklist generator
- Pick your moving day. Leave it empty if you do not have one yet and you will get an undated list grouped by timeframe.
- Say whether you rent or own, and who is doing the move: professional movers, a rental truck, or friends and family.
- Tick the details that apply: children, pets, a long distance move, vehicles to move, or working from home. Each one adds the tasks that go with it.
- Add your own tasks, one per line. They appear in their own section at the end of the list.
- Press Download PDF or Print, or choose Download calendar file (.ics) to put every dated task on your own calendar.
How the dates are worked out
Every task belongs to a timeframe, and each timeframe is a fixed number of days before moving day: 8 weeks is 56 days, 6 weeks is 42, 4 weeks is 28, 2 weeks is 14, 1 week is 7, and 1 day is 1. After the move the list continues 3 days and 28 days past moving day. The date shown on each task is simply moving day minus that number of days, using the real calendar, so months of different length and leap days are handled correctly.
For a move on Saturday, October 31, 2026, the 8 week tasks are dated September 5, the 4 week tasks October 3, the 1 week tasks October 24 and the 1 day tasks October 30. For a move on March 1, 2028, the day before is February 29 because 2028 is a leap year. If a date has already passed when you open the page, the heading says so, which is your cue to do those tasks first rather than skip them.
What the options change
Renters are reminded to read the lease for the notice period and give notice in writing, and to arrange renters insurance. Owners get a reminder to coordinate closing and moving dates and to update homeowners insurance. Professional movers add quotes, booking and confirmation steps; a rental truck adds price comparison and reservation; friends and family add a reminder to book a date.
Children add school records and enrollment, pets add vet records and registration, a long distance move adds prescription refills, medical records and a car service, and working from home adds an internet and desk check. Tasks that do not apply are left off, so the printed list is as short as it can be.
Rules that vary and are not built in
Deadlines for updating a driver license, vehicle registration and voter registration depend on the state, and notice periods in a lease depend on the lease and local law. The list only reminds you that these tasks exist. Check the actual deadlines with your state motor vehicle agency, election office and landlord. The list also does not cover customs, visas or international shipping.
Moving can be stressful, and the order of tasks is a suggestion. If your moving date is only three weeks away, start at the earliest task that has not passed and work forward, and use the calendar file to spread the work across the days you have.
Assumptions and limits
- The task timing is a general planning pattern, not a legal schedule. Your lease, contract or employer may require different dates.
- Task dates assume your moving day is firm. If it changes, change the date in the tool and print again.
- The calendar file contains all-day events with no reminders. Your calendar app decides how it alerts you.
- The tool does not know your state. Driver license, vehicle registration, voting and tax rules vary by state and are listed only as reminders to check.
- Saved answers, if you choose to save them, stay in this browser only and are never uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
How far ahead should I start planning a move?
Eight weeks is a common starting point, which is why the list begins there. A shorter move still works: start at the earliest task whose date has not passed and work forward.
Can I get this moving checklist in my calendar?
Yes. Enter a moving day and press Download calendar file. It contains one all-day event for each dated task and opens in Apple Calendar, Google Calendar, Outlook and other calendar apps.
Does the checklist change if I own my home?
Yes. Owners do not get the landlord notice step, and instead see reminders to line up closing and moving dates and to update homeowners insurance.
What if I do not know my moving day yet?
Leave the date empty. You still get every task grouped by timeframe, such as 4 weeks before, and the dates appear as soon as you enter a moving day.
Does it know the rules for my state?
No. It reminds you to update your license, registration and voter details, but deadlines differ by state, so check with your state agencies for the exact rules.
What should I do next for the trip itself?
If the move includes a long drive, use the packing list generator for the travel bag, and the home maintenance checklist generator once you settle in.
