How to use the packing list generator
- Pick the trip type, the number of nights, and the weather. Tick rain, international travel, or laundry access if they apply.
- Enter how many adults, children and babies in diapers are traveling. Each group gets its own clothing and supplies section.
- Add anything personal in Extra items, one per line, and give the list a title.
- Check the preview, then press Download PDF or Print. Tick the boxes by hand as you pack.
- Tick Remember my entries in this browser if you want your choices and extras waiting next time. Nothing is uploaded.
How clothing quantities are worked out
The days you are away are the nights plus one. The tool then plans clothing for that many days, or for at most seven days if you say you can do laundry, because most people re-wear and wash rather than pack two weeks of outfits.
For an adult the rules are: underwear for each day plus one spare, a pair of socks per day, one top per day, one pair of pants or shorts for every three days (never fewer than two), and one set of sleepwear for every four days (at least one). A five night trip is six days, so the list shows 7 underwear, 6 pairs of socks, 6 tops, 2 bottoms and 2 sleepwear sets. For a 14 night trip with laundry the plan is capped at 7 days, giving 8 underwear and 3 bottoms, but without laundry the same trip needs 16 underwear and 5 bottoms.
Children get more because small people need changes: outfits per day plus half again (9 for a six day trip), underwear for each day plus two and socks for each day plus one. Babies get eight diapers per day of the trip, a number you should change if your baby uses more or fewer, along with outfits, sleepers, bibs and wipes. These are planning rules of thumb, not requirements, and you can edit the printed list freely.
What changes with the trip type
A beach trip adds swimsuits, a cover-up and a beach towel. A city break adds a day bag and offline maps. Business trips add outfits (up to five), dress shoes and a laptop section. Camping and hiking brings a gear list including a tent, sleeping bag, headlamp and first aid kit. Winter trips add snow clothing, goggles and hand warmers, and road trips add a roadside kit and car paperwork.
Weather matters too: warm weather swaps in sandals and sun protection, cold weather adds a coat, boots and thermal layers, and the rain option adds a jacket and a compact umbrella. International trips add passport and entry papers, currency and a plug adapter. Check official sources for the rules that apply to your trip, since passport validity, visas and airline baggage limits change.
Packing tips that save trouble
Pack a day bag with a spare outfit, snacks, medicines and chargers so you can reach them without opening a suitcase. Keep documents together and carry them with you rather than in checked luggage. Weigh your bag at home if your airline charges by weight, and leave space for what you will bring back.
Assumptions and limits
- Quantities are common rules of thumb. They are not safety advice, airline limits, or medical guidance. Adjust them to your own habits.
- The tool does not know the actual forecast, destination customs rules, airline baggage limits, or prohibited items. Check those with the airline, airport and destination.
- The baby diaper figure of 8 per day is an example default that varies a lot by age. Change the printed number by hand if needed.
- Medicines are listed as a reminder only. The tool gives no medical advice and does not know which medicines you take.
- Only characters the built-in print font can draw appear on the PDF. Emoji and non-Latin scripts print as a question mark.
Frequently asked questions
How many days of clothes should I pack for a long trip?
With a chance to do laundry, planning for about a week of clothing is usually enough, so this tool caps clothing at 7 days when you tick the laundry box. Without laundry it plans for every day of the trip.
Does the list change for kids and babies?
Yes. Each child gets extra outfits, underwear and socks, and babies get a diaper count based on the length of the trip plus feeding and sleeping items. You can set zero for any group.
Can I add my own items to the packing list?
Type them in the Extra items box, one per line. They appear in their own section at the end of the list, and you can keep them for next time by ticking the remember box.
Is this packing list suitable for international travel?
Tick the international option to add a passport, entry papers, currency and a plug adapter. It cannot know visa rules, vaccine rules or customs limits for your destination, so check official government sources.
Where do my packing list choices go?
Nowhere. The list is built in your browser. If you tick the remember box your choices are kept in this browser only, and you can delete them by unticking it.
What should I do after I finish packing?
Work out how long you will be away and any key dates with the days between dates calculator, and use the moving checklist generator when a trip is really a move.
