      Next step

How to use the name tag maker

      1. Type one name per line. To add a second line such as a job title, class or company, put a vertical bar after the name, for example Maria Lopez | Volunteer.
      2. Choose how many tags go on a page: 6, 8, 10 or 12. Pick a colored band, a line only (to save ink), or no header, and edit the header text.
      3. Set copies of each tag if people need more than one, and tick blank tags to fill the rest of the last page with tags that have a line for writing by hand.
      4. Check the preview. Names shrink to fit and wrap to more lines when they are long.
      5. Press Download PDF or Print, then cut along the dashed lines or print on adhesive label stock.

      Sizes and layouts

Each layout is a grid of equal tags centered on a US Letter page inside a half inch margin. Six per page gives two columns by three rows of 3.5 by 3 inch tags. Eight per page gives two columns by four rows of 3.375 by 2.33 inch tags, a common badge size. Ten per page gives 3.5 by 1.89 inch tags in two columns and five rows, and twelve per page gives three columns by four rows of 2.36 by 2.33 inch tags. The grid for eight tags measures 6.75 by 9.33 inches, so it sits 0.375 inch from each side of the printable box.

These sizes are chosen to be close to popular badge and label dimensions, but they are not aligned to any particular brand or product number. If you plan to print on adhesive label sheets or into badge holders, print one page on plain paper first, hold it against the sheet or a badge, and check the fit before printing the full set. If the alignment is off, use plain paper and cut along the dashed lines.

      How the text is fitted

The name is the biggest element. The tool wraps it into the space under the header, tries the largest type size from 34 down to 8 points, and keeps the first size at which every line fits the width and the block fits the height. A long full name therefore wraps to two lines at a smaller size rather than running off the edge, and a short first name prints large enough to read from across a room. The second line, if there is one, is fitted separately in gray.

Characters outside the basic Latin letters used by the built-in print font cannot be drawn, so names in other alphabets print as question marks. Accented letters such as é and ñ are supported. Check names with accents in the preview before printing.

      Tips for events

Print names in alphabetical order by sorting your list first, so volunteers can find tags quickly at a check-in table. Print a few extra blank tags for walk-ins, and let people write their own first name in large marker. A band header uses more ink than a line header, so choose the line style for large events. Keep the list in a spreadsheet and paste it here whenever the guest list changes. Nothing you type is uploaded, and the tags are made in your browser.

      Assumptions and limits

      • Tag sizes are approximate matches to common badge sizes, not aligned to a specific label product. Test print on plain paper before using label stock.
      • Up to 600 tags in one print, including copies. Names are printed in the order you list them.
      • The built-in print font covers Latin letters with accents. Other alphabets and emoji print as a question mark.
      • Very long names are shrunk to as small as 8 points and then shortened with three dots.
      • Page margins are half an inch, so tags do not reach the paper edge. This keeps home printers from clipping them.

      Frequently asked questions

How do I put a title or company under each name?

Type the name, then a vertical bar, then the second line, for example Maria Lopez | Volunteer. The second line prints in smaller gray text under the name.

Will these print on Avery or other label sheets?

The sizes are close to common badge sizes but are not matched to any brand's sheet, so alignment can be off. Print on plain paper first and compare it with the label sheet before you print on it.

Can I print blank name tags?

Yes. Tick the blank tags option and the rest of the last page is filled with tags that have a writing line. You can also leave the names box empty to print a page of blanks.

How many name tags can I make at once?

Up to 600 tags including copies, at 6, 8, 10 or 12 per page. Each page includes dashed cut lines if you leave that option ticked.

Can I change the Hello, my name is header?

Yes. Edit the header text, for example to your event name, or choose line only or no header. The header is the same on every tag in one print.

What should I use to collect names at the door?

A sign-up sheet on a clipboard works well, and the meeting agenda and minutes template helps run the event itself.
