How this was calculated
  1. Contract tricks: 30 per trick in a major suit, times 1 when doubled or redoubled. That is 120.
  2. A contract with 100 or more trick points earns a game bonus (300 not vulnerable, 500 vulnerable); otherwise a part-score bonus of 50. A small slam adds 500 or 750 and a grand slam 1000 or 1500, not vulnerable and vulnerable. Making a doubled contract adds 50 and a redoubled one 100.
  3. Overtricks score their normal trick value undoubled, and a flat bonus per trick when doubled or redoubled.
  • This is duplicate (matchpoint or IMP board) scoring. Rubber bridge counts points above and below the line differently and is not covered. Check the rules of your club or event for any local variation.

How to use the contract bridge score calculator

  1. Choose the contract level (1 to 7), the suit or notrump, and whether it was doubled or redoubled.
  2. Tick whether the declaring side is vulnerable.
  3. Enter the tricks the declarer took, counting all tricks out of 13.
  4. Read the score for the declaring side, or for the defenders if the contract failed, with each part shown.

Formula

Trick points: 20 per trick in clubs and diamonds, 30 in hearts and spades, 40 then 30 per trick in notrump; times 2 doubled, 4 redoubled

Game bonus 300 not vulnerable, 500 vulnerable if trick points reach 100; otherwise 50 for a part score

Slam bonus: small slam 500 or 750, grand slam 1000 or 1500

Undertricks: 50 or 100 each undoubled; doubled and redoubled scores rise with each trick down

Overtricks score their trick value undoubled, and 100 or 200 each when doubled and 200 or 400 when redoubled, not vulnerable and vulnerable. Making a doubled contract adds 50, redoubled 100.

Common results

4 hearts making exactly, not vulnerable, scores 4 x 30 = 120 trick points plus 300 for game, 420 in all. 3 notrump vulnerable with an overtrick scores 100 trick points + 30 + 500 = 630. 4 spades doubled and made, not vulnerable, scores 240 + 300 + 50 = 590.

4 hearts doubled and down 3, vulnerable, scores the defenders 200 + 300 + 300 = 800. 6 spades vulnerable and made scores 180 + 500 + 750 = 1430, and 7 notrump not vulnerable and made scores 220 + 300 + 1000 = 1520. 1 notrump made exactly scores 40 + 50 = 90.

Where the points come from

A bridge score has trick points for the tricks bid and made, bonuses for reaching game or slam, and overtrick points for extra tricks. A contract that fails scores penalty points for the defenders based on how many tricks it fell short, rising faster when the contract was doubled. Vulnerability raises both the bonuses and the penalties, which is why bids are more risky when vulnerable.

Duplicate scoring only

This page scores single deals the way duplicate bridge does, where the scores are compared with other tables. Rubber bridge counts trick points above and below a line and has different bonuses, such as honors and the rubber bonus, which this page leaves out. Clubs and events can vary some rules, so check the one you play under.

Assumptions and limits

  • Scores follow the common duplicate scoring table for one deal. Rubber bridge, honors and Chicago scoring are not included.
  • Tricks are counted out of 13, so a 4 level contract needs 10 tricks.
  • Vulnerability applies to the declaring side, and the result is positive for the declaring side or shown as the defenders' score.
  • The results are rules arithmetic, not a judgment of the bidding or play.

Frequently asked questions

How is a bridge contract scored?

Multiply the tricks bid by their value (20 in clubs and diamonds, 30 in hearts and spades, 40 then 30 in notrump), add a bonus for game or part score, any slam bonus and any overtricks. Doubling multiplies the trick points and changes the bonuses.

How many points make game?

A contract that scores 100 or more trick points earns a game bonus. That means 3 notrump, 4 hearts or spades and 5 clubs or diamonds, or any higher or doubled contract that reaches 100 points.

What is the penalty for going down?

Undoubled, the defenders score 50 per trick down not vulnerable and 100 vulnerable. Doubled, it is 100 for the first, 200 each for the second and third and 300 after, not vulnerable, and 200 then 300 each vulnerable.

What are the slam bonuses?

A small slam (12 tricks, a 6 level contract) earns 500 not vulnerable and 750 vulnerable. A grand slam (13 tricks, level 7) earns 1000 and 1500.
