Scrabble Word Score Calculator

Enter a word, mark blanks and premium squares, and get the score with every step.

Type a word, then mark any blank tiles and the board squares each tile sits on. Add more words for the cross words formed in the same turn. The tool does not check that a word is in a dictionary.

Tile values: 1 point for A E I L N O R S T U, 2 for D G, 3 for B C M P, 4 for F H V W Y, 5 for K, 8 for J X, and 10 for Q Z. A blank tile is worth 0. A double or triple letter square multiplies only the tile on it. A double or triple word square multiplies the whole word, and two word squares in one word multiply together (a double and a triple make 6). Letter squares count before word squares, and the 50 point bonus is added last and is not multiplied. These are the values for the English language game. Everything runs in your browser.

Next step

How to use the scrabble word score calculator

  1. Type a word in Word 1. Tiles appear for each letter, with the value of each shown.
  2. Tick Blank on any tile that is a blank, and pick the premium square under each new tile: double or triple letter, double or triple word, or no bonus.
  3. Tick the 50 point box if you used all seven tiles from your rack.
  4. Press Add another word for each cross word made in the same turn. The turn total adds up every word.

How a word is scored

Each letter tile has a point value. In the English game, A E I L N O R S T U are worth 1, D and G are 2, B C M P are 3, F H V W and Y are 4, K is 5, J and X are 8, and Q and Z are 10. A blank tile is worth 0. The word score is the sum of its tile values, after any letter squares are applied. A double letter square doubles the tile on it and a triple letter square triples it.

Word squares come next. A double word square doubles the whole word and a triple word square triples it. When a word covers two word squares, the multipliers multiply together, so double and triple make times 6 and two triple word squares make times 9. The 50 point bonus for using all seven tiles is added last and is not multiplied. Tile values, premium squares, the blank tile and the 50 point bonus follow the rules listed on ScrabblePages, an independent site that is not affiliated with the game's owner. Multiplying two word squares together is the usual way to score them, so check your rule sheet if a table is in doubt.

Example

The word CAT has tiles worth 3, 1 and 1, which is 5 with no bonuses. With a double letter square under the C, the letters add to 6 + 1 + 1 = 8. If the T also sits on a double word square, the word is worth 8 x 2 = 16. If all seven tiles from the rack were used, the bonus makes it 66. QUIZ without bonuses is 10 + 1 + 1 + 10 = 22, and if the Z is a blank on a triple letter square, the Z scores 0 and the word scores 12.

Premium squares count only for tiles placed this turn. If a tile was already on the board, choose No bonus for it, because its square was used by an earlier move. For the cross words, add each new word that your play forms, with the tile you placed counted on its square, and tiles already on the board counted at face value.

What the tool does not check

It does not check whether a word is in a dictionary or whether it fits on the board. Tile values for languages other than English are different and are not included. Rules at tournaments and local variations may differ in small ways, so check your own rules for details. To keep score through a whole game, use the score keeper, and for another game that is scored by hand, see the cribbage hand calculator. The word search maker is a good companion for word lovers.

Assumptions and limits

  • Tile values are those of the English language game: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 points as listed above, with blanks worth 0.
  • Two word squares in one word multiply together, and letter squares count before word squares.
  • The 50 point bonus is added after the multipliers for using all seven tiles from the rack.
  • Words are A to Z only, up to 15 letters, and no dictionary check is made.

Frequently asked questions

How do I score a Scrabble word?

Add the tile values, applying double or triple letter squares to their own tile, then multiply by any word squares. Add the 50 point bonus if you used all seven tiles.

How much is a blank tile worth?

A blank is worth 0 points. It can stand for any letter, but it still scores nothing, even on a letter square. A word square under it still multiplies the word.

What if a word covers a double and a triple word square?

The multipliers multiply together, so the word score is multiplied by 6.

Do premium squares count again later in the game?

No. A premium square counts only on the turn a tile is first placed there. Choose No bonus for tiles that are already on the board.
