How to use the bowling score calculator

    1. Bowl a ball and tap the number of pins it knocked down. Use 0 for a miss or gutter ball. Use the Strike and Spare buttons as shortcuts.
    2. The scorecard fills in as you go, with X for strikes, a slash for spares and a dash for a miss. Scores for strikes and spares appear once the bonus balls are known.
    3. Use Undo last ball if you tapped the wrong number, and New game to start the next bowler.
    4. Press Copy scorecard to copy the frame by frame results as text.

    How ten pin scoring works

A game has ten frames. In each frame you get up to two balls to knock down all ten pins.

    • An open frame scores the pins you knocked down.
    • A spare, which is all ten pins in two balls, scores 10 plus the pins from your next ball.
    • A strike, which is all ten pins on the first ball, scores 10 plus the pins from your next two balls.
    • In the tenth frame a strike or spare earns bonus balls, up to three in all, and those count only for that frame.

Why a score may show up late

After a strike the frame cannot be scored until the next two balls are thrown, and after a spare until the next ball. Frames after it wait too, because each score includes the one before. That is why a game in progress sometimes shows a score for earlier frames only. The Score so far figure shows the latest frame that can be scored.

    Highest possible score

The tool also shows the highest score you can still reach if every remaining ball is as good as possible. A perfect game is 300 and comes from twelve strikes in a row. After an open frame in the first frame, for example, the best you can do is lower. This is a useful way to see whether a game is still out of reach. For other sports with a score formula see the passer rating calculator, and for any game use the score keeper.

    Assumptions and limits

    • The tool scores standard ten pin bowling with ten frames. It does not cover candlepin, duckpin or five pin rules.
    • You enter the pins knocked down by each ball, and the buttons only allow counts that are possible on that ball.
    • The scorecard is for one bowler at a time and is not saved when you leave the page.
    • Handicaps, averages and league rules are not included.

    Frequently asked questions

How do you score a strike in bowling?

A strike scores 10 plus the number of pins you knock down with your next two balls. If you bowl another strike and then a 7, the first strike is worth 10 + 10 + 7 = 27.

How do you score a spare?

A spare scores 10 plus the pins from your next ball. A spare followed by a 6 gives that frame 16 points.

What is a perfect bowling score?

A perfect game is 300, which is twelve strikes in a row, one in each of the first nine frames and three in the tenth.

Why do I get extra balls in the tenth frame?

Because bonus pins for a strike or spare in the last frame would otherwise have no next frame to count. A strike earns two extra balls and a spare earns one, and they are scored as pins for the tenth frame.
