Tally Counter

Count people, laps, items or votes with large tap targets. Run several counters at once and keep them between visits.

Counters are saved in this browser on this device so they survive a reload. Clearing site data removes them. Nothing is sent to any server.

How to use the tally counter

  1. Press the large + 1 button each time something happens. Press the - 1 button to take one away.
  2. Click the Name box to rename a counter, for example Adults, Children or Laps.
  3. Change the Step if you count in fives or tens. The buttons then add or subtract that amount.
  4. Press Add a counter to count several things at once. A total shows when you have more than one.
  5. Use Reset for one counter, Reset all to 0 for all of them, Copy counts to paste the numbers elsewhere, and Clear saved data to wipe what this browser has kept.

Built for quick, repeated taps

A tally counter is for jobs where you cannot stop to type: counting visitors at a door, laps in a pool, items on a shelf, votes in a show of hands, or reps in a workout. The plus button is deliberately large and takes up most of the width, so you can tap it without looking. Each counter has its own name, step and reset, so you can count adults and children separately and see the total.

Counts can go negative if you subtract below zero, which helps when you are correcting a miscount. The largest value is about 999 million in either direction, and counters stop there rather than overflowing. Up to 20 counters are allowed.

Where your counts are kept

Your counters are saved with the storage built into your browser, every time you change something. If you reload the page or come back tomorrow on the same device and browser, the numbers are still there. Nothing is sent to a server, and no account is needed.

Because the data lives in your browser, it is not shared between devices, and a private window or a clear of site data will remove it. If your browser blocks storage, the page tells you that counts will be lost on reload. Use Copy counts to keep a record somewhere permanent. Stored data is read defensively, so a damaged or hand-edited entry falls back to a fresh counter instead of breaking the page.

Accessibility

Every control is a real button with a text label and a tap target of at least 44 pixels. Each button also has a longer label for screen readers, such as Add 1 to Adults. The count itself is announced politely when it changes, and the page works with a keyboard alone: Tab to a button and press Space or Enter.

Assumptions and limits

  • Counters are saved only in this browser on this device. They are not synced or backed up.
  • The step must be a whole number from 1 to 1,000. Anything else is replaced with 1 and you are told.
  • Names are limited to 40 characters and the page allows up to 20 counters.
  • Counts are whole numbers between about minus and plus 999 million.

Frequently asked questions

Will my tally counter keep its numbers if I close the page?

Yes, on the same browser and device. The counters are written to your browser storage whenever they change and read back when you return. A private window, a different browser or cleared site data starts fresh.

Can I count more than one thing at the same time?

Yes. Press Add a counter for up to 20 separate counters, each with its own name and step. When you have more than one, the page also shows the total across all of them.

How do I count by 5 or 10 instead of 1?

Change the Step box under the counter to the amount you want. The plus and minus buttons then show that amount and add or subtract it with every tap.

Can I go below zero on a click counter?

Yes, the minus button keeps going into negative numbers. That is useful for correcting a mistake or tracking a balance. Use Reset to return a counter to zero.

How do I keep my results after counting?

Press Copy counts to put every name and number on your clipboard, then paste them into a note or spreadsheet. For timing as well as counting, try the online timer.
