Tournament Bracket Generator

Enter your teams, choose seeding, and print a clean bracket or a round robin schedule.

Enter your teams or players and get a printable bracket. Single elimination handles any number up to 32, with byes given to the top seeds. Round robin schedules every team against every other team (up to 16).

How to use the tournament bracket generator

      1. Name the tournament and type each team or player on its own line. Up to 32 entries work for single elimination and up to 16 for round robin.
      2. Choose the format. Single elimination knocks out the loser of each game. Round robin has every team play every other team once.
      3. Choose seeding: the order you typed (first line is the top seed) or a random draw. A random draw uses the draw code, so the same code repeats the same draw.
      4. Read the summary under the preview, which lists the byes, first round games and total games. Add a third place line if you want one.
      5. Press Download PDF or Print, then write winners on the lines as the games finish.

How byes work in single elimination

A single elimination bracket needs a field that is a power of two: 2, 4, 8, 16 or 32. When your number of teams is something else, the bracket is rounded up to the next power of two and the empty places become byes. A team with a bye skips the first round and moves straight to the second.

The tool gives the byes to the top seeds. With 5 teams the bracket has 8 slots, so there are 3 byes. Seeds 1, 2 and 3 get them, and the only first round game is seed 4 against seed 5. That is 1 game in round one and 4 games in all. The number of games in any single elimination tournament is always one fewer than the number of teams, because every game eliminates exactly one team and exactly one team is left at the end.

Seeding follows the standard order. In an 8 slot bracket the first round pairs are 1 against 8, 4 against 5, 2 against 7 and 3 against 6, so seeds 1 and 2 can only meet in the final and the strongest teams face the weakest early. Any two seeds in a pair always add up to the bracket size plus one.

      Round robin schedules

In a round robin, n teams play n(n-1)/2 games in total. For 7 teams that is 21 games, and for 16 teams it is 120. The schedule uses the circle method: one team stays fixed while the others rotate one place each round, which guarantees that every pair meets exactly once and nobody plays twice in the same round. With an odd number of teams one team sits out each round, shown as a bye, so 7 teams need 7 rounds, while an even field of 16 needs 15 rounds.

The second page is a blank standings table with columns for wins, losses, ties and points, because scoring rules differ by sport and league. Fill it in as games finish, and use your own tiebreakers.

      Fair seeding and printing

If your entries have no natural ranking, use the random draw. The draw is a Fisher-Yates shuffle, so every order is equally likely, and the draw code makes it repeatable. If you do have rankings, enter the teams from best to worst and keep seeding as entered.

The bracket prints on one landscape US Letter page, with lines to write winners and a champion box. Names are shrunk to fit their line and long names are shortened with three dots rather than overflowing.

      Assumptions and limits

      • The bracket is single elimination only. Double elimination, consolation brackets and multi-pool formats are not built in.
      • Byes always go to the highest seeds. If seeding is random, byes go to the first names after the shuffle.
      • Single elimination holds up to 32 entries on one page, and round robin up to 16. Larger events need to be split into groups.
      • Round robin pairings are fixed by the circle method. The tool does not balance home and away games, courts or time slots.
      • The page does not record scores or advance winners. It prints the structure and you fill it in by hand.

      Frequently asked questions

How many games are in a single elimination tournament?

Always one fewer than the number of teams. Each game eliminates one team, and one team must remain, so 5 teams play 4 games and 32 teams play 31.

What is a bye and who gets it?

A bye is a free pass to the next round when the field is not a power of two. This tool gives byes to the top seeds, so the best teams skip round one.

How is a round robin schedule built?

With the circle method. One team stays in place and the rest rotate each round. Every pair meets once, and with an odd number of teams one team sits out each round.

Can I make a random draw for the bracket?

Choose Random draw. Entries are shuffled with an unbiased shuffle and the draw code repeats the same draw later. Press Redraw for a different arrangement.

      Does it support double elimination?

No. It prints single elimination and round robin. For a double elimination event, run two single elimination brackets or use the round robin format for a pool stage.

What can I use alongside the bracket?

Use the random name picker to settle ties or choose referees, and the weekly schedule maker to plan who plays when.
