How to use the bingo card generator
- Choose what goes on the cards: classic B-I-N-G-O numbers 1 to 75, a number range you set, or your own items typed one per line.
- Pick the card size (5 by 5, 4 by 4 or 3 by 3), a title, and whether the center is a free space. Free spaces apply to the odd sizes that have a middle square.
- Enter how many cards you need and how many go on each page. Two or four per page saves paper and you cut along the dashed lines.
- Check the preview. The card set code under the options reproduces the same cards later; press Shuffle new cards for a different set.
- Press Download PDF or Print. Keep the caller sheet for yourself: it lists every item once in a random order with tick boxes.
How each card is made
Classic American bingo uses 75 numbers split across five columns: B holds 1 to 15, I holds 16 to 30, N holds 31 to 45, G holds 46 to 60 and O holds 61 to 75. For every card the tool draws five different numbers at random from the B range, five from I, four from N (the fifth square is the free space), five from G and five from O, then shuffles each column into a random order. No number repeats on a card, and every number in a column is equally likely.
For number ranges and custom lists the tool shuffles the whole pool with a Fisher-Yates shuffle, which gives every ordering the same chance, and deals the first squares onto the card. Because a card needs 24 items with a free space (25 without), a custom list must have at least that many different entries. Items that repeat when you ignore capital letters are counted once, so the tool never prints the same word twice on one card.
Every card is different
A set of cards is only useful if two players cannot win at the same moment with identical cards. The tool compares each new card with the ones already made and discards duplicates. The number of possible classic cards is enormous: 15 x 14 x 13 x 12 x 11 = 360,360 ways to fill each of the B, I, G and O columns, and 15 x 14 x 13 x 12 = 32,760 ways for the N column, giving about 5.5 x 10^26 different cards. You can ask for up to 100 cards at once.
Different does not mean no shared lines. Two different cards can still have a row or column in common, which is normal in bingo, and with a small custom list many squares will repeat from card to card. A longer list makes cards less alike. A rule of thumb is a list at least twice as long as the card has squares.
Running the game
Print the cards, then use the caller sheet or draw items from a bag. Players mark squares as they are called. A win is usually a full row, column or diagonal; agree on the pattern before you start, such as four corners or a full card. The free space counts as marked.
Because the card set code is saved in the options, you can reprint a lost card or a full set later by entering the same code with the same settings. Change any option and you will get a different layout.
Printing tips
Two cards per page suits most classroom and party use, and four per page makes cards about 3.7 inches wide. Print on heavier paper for cards that will be handled a lot. Cards are drawn inside a half inch margin so home printers do not clip them.
Assumptions and limits
- The classic option follows the common 75-ball American layout. Other regional bingo formats, such as 90-ball games, are not built in; use your own items or a number range instead.
- Cards are generated in your browser with a seeded shuffle so a code can recreate a set. This is for games and classroom use, not for gambling, lotteries or any setting where the draw must be audited.
- Only characters that the built-in print font can draw appear on the cards. Emoji and non-Latin scripts print as a question mark.
- The tool does not check which items are called during play. The caller sheet is a printed list only.
- Free space text is limited to 16 characters, titles to 40, and custom items are shrunk to fit, so very long phrases may print small.
Frequently asked questions
How many different bingo cards can this make?
For classic 5 by 5 cards with a free space there are about 5.5 x 10^26 possible cards, so any set of up to 100 will have no duplicates. With your own list the limit depends on how many items you give it.
Can I make bingo cards with words or pictures?
Words and short phrases, yes: choose My own items and type one per line. Pictures are not supported, but you can print blank squares by listing short filler words and drawing on the cards.
What is the card set code for?
It seeds the shuffle. Entering the same code with the same options recreates exactly the same cards, which is handy for reprinting a missing card. Press Shuffle new cards for a fresh code.
Why does the free space not appear on 4 by 4 cards?
A free space sits in the exact center, and a card with an even number of rows has no center square. Use 3 by 3 or 5 by 5 cards if you want one.
How do I print several cards on one sheet?
Set Cards per page to 2 or 4. The cards share the sheet and dashed lines show where to cut. For smaller sheets you can also print at a reduced scale from the print dialog.
Is anything uploaded when I make bingo cards?
No. Items and cards stay in your browser and the PDF is made on your device. If you need a way to pick names for prizes, try the random name picker.
