Graph Paper Generator

Pick the paper, spacing and colors, then print graph paper that measures exactly what it says.

Choose the paper and spacing, check the preview, then download or print. Lines are drawn at true scale on US Letter, so print at 100 percent (Actual size).

Paper

For isometric paper this is the side of each triangle.

From 0.1 to 3 inches, or 0.25 to 7.6 cm.

Square and dot grids only.

How to use the graph paper generator

      1. Choose a paper type: square grid, dot grid, isometric lines or isometric dots. The preview updates as you change options.
      2. Pick a spacing such as 1/4 inch, 5 mm or 1 cm. For anything else choose Custom spacing, type a number and say whether it is inches or centimeters.
      3. Set a heavier line every 4th, 5th or 10th square if you want a guide for counting, then choose the line color, weight and page orientation.
      4. Turn on axes with numbers for a coordinate plane, or add a name and date line for classwork. Set how many identical pages you need.
      5. Press Download PDF or Print. In the print dialog choose 100 percent or Actual size, never Fit to page, so the squares keep their true size.

How the grid is laid out

Every page is US Letter, 8.5 by 11 inches, or the same sheet turned sideways. The grid lives inside a printable box with a half inch margin on each side and extra room at the bottom for the footer line that the PDF adds. That box is 540 points wide and 688 points tall in portrait, where a point is 1/72 inch.

The tool counts how many whole squares fit, then centers the grid left to right. With the default 1/4 inch spacing a square is 18 points, so the box holds exactly 30 squares across and 38 down (38.2 fits, and the leftover is not drawn as a partial row). That is 1,140 squares on a 7.5 by 9.5 inch grid. A dot grid with the same spacing has a dot at every crossing, which is 31 by 39 = 1,209 dots.

Because the grid is built from exact measurements rather than scaled to fill the page, the spacing between lines is the spacing you chose. A ruler laid across ten of the 1/4 inch squares reads 2.5 inches when the page is printed at 100 percent.

      Choosing spacing and line weight

Quarter inch grid suits math homework, sketching and most engineering notes. Fifth inch (0.2) matches the common 5 squares per inch paper. One eighth inch is used for small drawings and pixel art. Half inch and one inch grids are good for large diagrams, floor plans and teaching young children to plot points.

Centimeter grids follow the metric system: 5 mm for fine work, 1 cm for general use. A 1 cm grid fits 19 squares across and 24 down on Letter portrait, which is 456 squares. The tool never converts your choice silently: the unit you pick is the unit you get.

Fine lines stay out of the way when you write over them, standard lines are clear on most printers, and bold lines are easier to see after photocopying. Heavier lines every 4th or 5th square make counting and plotting faster. A light gray or blue grid keeps pencil and pen marks readable.

      Isometric paper

Isometric paper is used for drawing three dimensional objects on a flat page. It is made of equilateral triangles, so three sets of parallel lines meet at 60 degree angles: one set runs straight up and down and the other two run at 30 degrees above and below horizontal. For isometric paper the spacing you choose is the length of a triangle side, and the vertical lines end up about 0.866 times that distance apart.

The dotted version places a dot at each triangle corner, which many designers prefer because the page looks less busy. Both versions are cut to the printable box, so lines stop cleanly at the edge.

      Printing at true scale

Browsers and PDF viewers often shrink a page to fit the printer margins. That shrinking changes every measurement. In the print dialog look for Scale, Page scaling or Size and choose 100 percent, Actual size or None. Check one printed square against a ruler once. Some printers cannot print within about a quarter inch of the sheet edge, which is why this tool keeps a half inch margin.

The PDF is made on your device and never uploaded, and the browser Print button prints the same drawing that is on screen.

      Assumptions and limits

      • The page is US Letter, 8.5 by 11 inches. Other paper sizes are not offered, and A4 printing would need scaling that changes the spacing.
      • Spacing is exact in the file. Printed accuracy depends on your printer and on printing at 100 percent. Rulers, printers and paper can each be off by a small amount.
      • Only whole squares are drawn. The grid is centered and never ends in a partial square, so the outer border is a bit inside the half inch margin.
      • Spacing is limited to 0.1 to 3 inches (0.25 to 7.6 cm) so the page stays readable and the file stays small.
      • Axis numbers count heavier lines when you choose them, or single squares when there is no heavier line. The origin sits on the grid line nearest the center.

      Frequently asked questions

What size is the graph paper this tool makes?

Each sheet is US Letter, 8.5 by 11 inches, in portrait or landscape. The drawn grid fits inside a half inch margin, so a 1/4 inch grid is 30 squares across and 38 down in portrait.

Why do my printed squares look smaller than the spacing I picked?

Almost always the print dialog was set to Fit to page or Shrink to fit. Reprint with scale set to 100 percent or Actual size. Then lay a ruler across several squares and divide to confirm.

Can I make isometric graph paper without lines?

Yes. Choose Isometric dots to print only the triangle corners, spaced by the side length you set. It gives the same 30 degree guides with a quieter page.

How do I print a coordinate plane with numbers?

Pick square or dot grid, tick the axes option and set a heavier line every 5th or 10th square. The x and y axes cross near the center and each heavier line is numbered outward from zero.

Can I use a spacing that is not on the list?

Choose Custom spacing, type a decimal such as 0.3 and set the unit. Inches from 0.1 to 3 and centimeters from 0.25 to 7.6 are accepted. Anything outside that range shows a message instead of a page.

Does the graph paper tool upload anything?

No. The pages are drawn in your browser, and the PDF is created on your device. Nothing you choose is sent anywhere. For related notes paper see the lined paper generator.
