Sepia Filter Online

Choose a picture and slide the strength to get a warm sepia look.

Your files stay on your device. They are processed in your browser and are never uploaded to SumPanda.

Each pixel is mixed toward a brown-toned version of itself. At 100% the new red is 0.393 R + 0.769 G + 0.189 B, the new green is 0.349 R + 0.686 G + 0.168 B and the new blue is 0.272 R + 0.534 G + 0.131 B, each limited to 255. This is the same matrix the CSS sepia filter uses. Lower strengths blend the original and the sepia version. Transparency is not changed. The image is read and changed in your browser and nothing is uploaded. The saved file has the same pixel size as the original.

Next step

How to use the sepia filter online

  1. Choose an image or drop it on the box. JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF are supported, up to 25 MB. SVG is not accepted.
  2. Move the strength slider from 0 to 100%. At 100% the picture is fully sepia, and lower values blend it with the original.
  3. Choose to save as PNG or JPG, then press Apply and download.
  4. Use Reset to 100% to go back to the full effect.

How the sepia tone is made

Each pixel's red, green and blue values are combined with a fixed set of weights to make a warm brown color. At full strength, the new red is 0.393 R + 0.769 G + 0.189 B, the new green is 0.349 R + 0.686 G + 0.168 B and the new blue is 0.272 R + 0.534 G + 0.131 B, each limited to 255. These are the same weights the CSS sepia filter uses, so results match what a browser shows with that filter.

A strength below 100% blends the sepia color with the original, pixel by pixel, so 50% is an even mix. White becomes a pale cream, and black stays black, since all the weights multiply a value of zero.

Getting a good result

Photos with strong colors lose them at full strength, which gives the antique look. A lower strength keeps a hint of the original colors for a subtler warm tone. If the result is too dark or too light, adjust it first with the brightness and contrast tool. For other looks, try the photo to sketch converter, or frame the picture with add border to image.

Privacy and file details

The image is changed in your browser and nothing is uploaded. The first bytes of the file are checked, and SVG and unknown types are refused. Transparency is kept in a PNG and becomes white in a JPG. The saved file has the same pixel size as the original, and location and camera metadata are not copied. To change formats afterward, use the image converter.

Assumptions and limits

  • The sepia matrix is the one in the CSS Filter Effects specification. Other tools may use slightly different weights.
  • For animated GIFs only the first frame is used.
  • Results are rounded to whole numbers from 0 to 255 for each color.
  • Images larger than 25 MB, 16,384 pixels on a side or 120 megapixels are refused.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a photo sepia?

Choose the picture, leave the strength at 100% for a full sepia tone, and press Apply and download. Lower the slider for a lighter effect.

What does the strength slider do?

It mixes the sepia color with the original color. At 0% nothing changes, at 50% the two are mixed evenly, and at 100% only the sepia color remains.

Does it keep transparent areas?

In a PNG, yes. A JPG cannot store transparency, so see-through areas are filled with white when you save as JPG.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The filter runs in your browser on your device, and the picture never leaves it.
