Captions

Preview

The picture and your words stay on your device: the caption is drawn in your browser and the result is saved from there. Long captions shrink to fit in up to three lines. Make sure you have the right to use the picture you start with.

Next step

How to use the meme generator

  1. Choose a picture of your own or drop it on the box. PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF files up to 25 MB are accepted.
  2. Type the top text and bottom text. Either can be left empty. The preview updates as you type.
  3. Choose the text color, the text size as a percent of the picture height, and whether to use a dark outline and capital letters.
  4. Pick PNG or JPEG and press Download the picture.

How long captions are fitted

Letters start at the size you choose, which is 12% of the picture height by default, so on a 500 pixel tall picture they start at 60 pixels. A caption may use up to three lines that are at most 94% of the picture width wide. If it does not fit, the size drops by 2 pixels at a time until it does, and it never goes below 3% of the picture height, or 8 pixels on a small picture.

A caption with one very long word is broken in the middle of the word rather than running off the picture. Top text is placed 3% of the height below the top edge and bottom text ends 3% of the height above the bottom edge.

The look

The classic style is large bold capital letters in white with a dark outline, which stays readable on both light and dark pictures. The tool uses a heavy display font if your device has one and falls back to a bold sans serif font otherwise, so the exact shapes depend on your system. Black and yellow text are available when white does not suit the picture.

Your picture stays with you

Nothing is uploaded. The picture is drawn in your browser and the result is saved from there, and the tool has no library of pictures. You choose a picture you have, so make sure you have the right to use it, and think about whether a caption could hurt someone before you share the result. For other edits, see crop an image, resize an image, add a border to an image and compress an image.

Assumptions and limits

  • The picture is saved at its own size, so the output has the same resolution as your original.
  • Photos turned by the camera are shown and saved upright, as your browser displays them.
  • Captions are limited to 200 characters each and three lines each.
  • SVG files are not accepted. Export the drawing as a PNG first.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a meme with my own picture?

Choose the picture, type the top and bottom text, adjust the size and color, and download the result as PNG or JPEG. Everything happens in your browser.

Does the meme generator upload my picture?

No. The picture and the text stay on your device. The caption is drawn in the browser and the file is saved from there.

What happens when my text is too long?

The text wraps onto up to three lines and the letters shrink in small steps until it fits within the picture width. Very long single words are broken to fit.

Which format should I choose?

PNG keeps text crisp and is best for most pictures. JPEG makes a smaller file for photos but can soften the edges of the letters slightly.
