Preview of the first picture

A visible watermark discourages casual reuse, but it is not protection: anyone with image editing software can crop, cover or retouch it. Your pictures are processed in your browser and are never uploaded. Output keeps the type of each picture (PNG stays PNG, JPEG stays JPEG), and one picture downloads on its own while several download in a ZIP.

Next step

How to use the add watermark to photo

  1. Choose one or more photos or drop them on the box. Up to 20 pictures of 25 MB each can be marked at once.
  2. Choose what to add: text, or a logo picture. For text, type the words and pick a color. For a logo, choose a PNG with a transparent background if you can.
  3. Set the position, size, opacity, angle and margin, or tick repeat the mark across the whole picture. The preview of the first picture updates as you change the settings.
  4. Press Add watermark and download. One picture downloads on its own, and several download together in a ZIP.

Where the mark lands

On a 200 by 100 pixel picture, a mark 40 by 20 pixels with a 10 pixel margin sits at x 10 and y 10 in the top left corner, and at x 150 and y 70 in the bottom right corner, since 200 - 40 - 10 = 150 and 100 - 20 - 10 = 70. In the center it sits at x 80 and y 40.

The size is a percent of the picture width, so a mark set to 10% of a 200 pixel wide picture is 20 pixels wide on that picture and 160 pixels wide on a 1600 pixel picture. That keeps the mark looking the same on pictures of different sizes. A repeated mark with a gap of 10 across a 100 by 100 area of 20 pixel tiles makes a 4 by 4 grid of 16 marks.

Text or logo

Text marks use a bold system font sized to the width you choose, with an optional thin dark outline so white text stays readable on light pictures. Logo marks are drawn at the size you choose with the logo keeping its proportions. Opacity lets the picture show through, and the angle turns the mark, which is useful for a diagonal stamp across the center.

In repeat mode the whole grid of marks is turned by the angle, so a set of diagonal marks covers the picture evenly. This is harder to crop out than a single corner mark, though it also hides more of the picture.

What a watermark can and cannot do

A visible watermark tells people whose picture it is and discourages casual reuse. It does not stop someone from cropping, covering or retouching it, so do not treat it as protection. To mark documents instead of photos use the watermark PDF tool, to frame a picture use add a border to an image, to shrink pictures first use the image resizer, and to hide faces or details use blur an image area.

The output keeps the type of each picture: a JPEG stays a JPEG at high quality and a PNG stays a PNG. The pictures are drawn in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

Assumptions and limits

  • Metadata such as camera and location data is not copied into the new pictures, because they are drawn again on a canvas.
  • Photos turned by the camera are shown upright, as your browser displays them, and saved upright.
  • Fonts come from your device, so text may look slightly different on different systems.
  • Very large pictures use a lot of memory. The limits are 25 MB per file and 120 megapixels per picture.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add a watermark to a photo?

Choose the photo, type your text or choose your logo, set the position, size and opacity, and press Add watermark and download. The preview shows the result before you save.

Can I watermark many photos at once?

Yes. Add up to 20 pictures. They all get the same mark and download in one ZIP. The mark is sized as a percent of each picture width so it looks the same on all of them.

Does a watermark stop people copying my picture?

No. It discourages casual reuse and shows ownership, but anyone can crop or edit a visible watermark away. Use it as a label, not as protection.

Will the picture lose quality?

PNG pictures stay lossless. JPEG pictures are saved again at high quality, which can change the file slightly but is not visible at normal viewing sizes.
