How to use the blur or pixelate part of an image
- Choose a picture.
- Pick an effect: blur, pixelate or black box, and a strength in pixels.
- Drag on the picture to mark an area, or type the left, top, width and height and press Add this area. Add as many as you need, up to 20.
- Pick a file type and press Download the picture.
Choosing an effect
Blur softens the area with a box blur run three times, and the strength is the radius in pixels of the original picture. Pixelate replaces each block of the strength size with its average color. A black box paints the area solid black.
Blur and pixelation can sometimes be partly reversed, especially on small text and faces, so use them for things like decoration or a face in a crowd. To hide a password, an account number, a name or an address for certain, use the black box and make it larger than the text. The tool says this on the page.
How large pictures are handled
The picture on screen is scaled down to 1,000 pixels on the long side so editing stays smooth. The areas you mark are stored in the original picture's pixels, and when you download, the same areas are applied to the full-size picture. Pictures up to 40 million pixels are accepted, and the preview tells you when it is scaled.
Saving makes a new file. Photo details such as location, which are stored in the original file, are not copied into it. The effects only touch the marked areas, and pixels outside an area are never read or changed. For cropping, borders and size, see the crop image tool, the add border tool and the image compressor.
Using the keyboard
Dragging needs a pointer, so there are boxes for the left, top, width and height of an area in pixels, and buttons to add, remove the last area or remove all. The picture never leaves your browser.
Assumptions and limits
- Areas are rectangles in the original picture's pixels.
- Blur and pixelation may be reversible. Use a black box for sensitive details.
- Pictures up to 25 MB and 40 million pixels are accepted. Up to 20 areas.
- Photo details are not kept in the saved file.
Frequently asked questions
How do I blur part of a picture?
Choose a picture, drag over the part you want to blur, and download. You can add more areas and choose pixelate or black box instead.
Is blurring enough to hide a password?
Not always. Blur and pixelation can sometimes be partly reversed, so cover sensitive text with a black box.
Does the download have the same size as my picture?
Yes. The preview is scaled down, but the file you download applies the areas to the full-size picture.
Can I use the keyboard instead of dragging?
Yes. Type the left, top, width and height of the area in pixels and press Add this area.
Is my picture uploaded?
No. It is edited in your browser and never sent anywhere.
