Flip Image Online

Choose a picture, pick a flip or a turn, and download the result.

Your files stay on your device. They are processed in your browser and are never uploaded to SumPanda.

Flipping mirrors the picture, so any writing in it reads backward, which is the point of a mirror image. Rotating by 90 degrees swaps the width and the height. The image is read and changed in your browser and nothing is uploaded. No pixel is altered, only moved. Photos stored sideways by a phone are turned upright first, as your browser shows them. Metadata such as the camera and location is not copied to the new file. JPG has no transparency, so see-through areas become white when you save as JPG.

How to use the flip image online

  1. Choose an image or drop it on the box. JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF are supported, up to 25 MB. SVG is not accepted.
  2. Choose the change: flip left to right, flip top to bottom, rotate right 90, rotate left 90, or rotate 180.
  3. Check the live preview, and choose to save as PNG or JPG.
  4. Press Change and download. The file is named with the change added, such as photo-flipped-horizontal.png.

Flipping versus rotating

A flip makes a mirror image: left to right swaps the left and right sides, and top to bottom swaps the top and bottom. A flip changes handedness, so any text in the picture reads backward. A rotation turns the picture without mirroring it, and 180 degrees is the same as flipping both ways. A 90 degree turn swaps the width and the height.

Common uses are correcting a selfie that was mirrored by the camera, fixing a scan that came out sideways or upside down, and creating a reflected copy for a design. If you just want to change the size, use the image resizer, and to cut away parts, use crop image.

Quality and file details

No pixels are altered, only moved, so a PNG comes out sharp. Saving as JPG compresses again, which loses a little quality, so PNG is the better choice for a flip you will edit further. See-through areas become white in a JPG. The saved file has the full pixel size of the original, and the preview is just a smaller copy.

Photos from phones are sometimes stored sideways with a note saying how to turn them. The browser reads that note, and the tool starts from the upright picture, as it looks in your photo app. Metadata such as the camera and the place is not copied to the new file.

Privacy and limits

The image is changed in your browser and never uploaded. The tool reads the first bytes of the file to confirm it is an image and refuses SVG and anything unknown. Very large pictures are refused with a message. To change a file type, use the image converter, or brighten a dark photo with the brightness adjuster.

Assumptions and limits

  • Only still images are processed. For animated GIFs, only the first frame is used.
  • The saved file has the same pixel size as the original, or swapped width and height for a 90 degree turn.
  • Metadata, including location, is not copied to the new file.
  • Images larger than 25 MB, 16,384 pixels on a side or 120 megapixels are refused.

Frequently asked questions

How do I flip an image?

Choose the picture, pick Flip left to right or Flip top to bottom, check the preview and press the download button. Nothing is uploaded.

What is the difference between flipping and rotating?

Flipping makes a mirror image, so text reads backward. Rotating turns the picture around without mirroring it. Rotating 180 degrees is the same as flipping both ways.

Will flipping reduce the quality?

No pixels are changed, only moved. A PNG keeps full quality. A JPG is compressed again when saved, so choose PNG if you plan to edit the result further.

Why was my file refused?

It may be an SVG drawing, a format the browser cannot read, a damaged file, or larger than the limits. The message says which, and JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF are accepted.
