How to use the youth sports lineup and rotation generator
- Type your players, one per line, and give the game a title.
- Enter how many players are on the field at once and how many periods there are. Choose whether to call them quarters, halves or something else.
- Add position names separated by commas, one for each spot on the field. Leave it empty to use Player 1, Player 2 and so on.
- Check the chart, press Mix up again if you want a different order, then download the PDF or print it for the sideline.
How the rotation works
The tool puts your players in an order, either as typed or mixed up by a code number. The bench is a block of players that moves along that order each period, so every player sits out the same number of periods give or take one. Players who are on the field are given positions that shift by one each period, so over a game players try different spots.
What fair means here
The tool gives everyone equal playing time as nearly as the numbers allow. With 10 players, 7 on the field and 4 periods, 12 bench slots are shared by 10 players, so two players sit twice and the rest once. The page tells you when playing time cannot be exactly equal. It does not look at skill, and you can edit the plan by hand if a coach needs to keep a particular player in goal or on defense.
Limits and tips
The chart holds up to 24 players and 12 periods so that names stay readable when printed. If more than half of your squad is on the bench in each period, some players will sit out two periods in a row, and the page says so. Use a different name for each player, such as Sam K and Sam R. The same code gives the same rotation, so you can reprint it later. For tournaments see the tournament bracket generator, and to pick one player at random use the random name picker.
Assumptions and limits
- Every player on the list is available for every period.
- Position names are just labels. The tool does not know the rules of any sport.
- Your team and settings stay in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and they are only remembered if you tick the box to remember them.
- The rotation is meant as a starting plan and coaches can change it as the game goes on.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make sure every kid gets equal playing time?
Enter your players, the number on the field and the number of periods. The rotation shares bench time evenly, and the chart shows how many periods each player plays and sits.
Can I set who plays goalie?
Not directly. Positions shift each period so the goalie spot passes around. If you want a fixed goalie, you can write down the plan and adjust it by hand, or leave that player's name out and enter one fewer on the field.
What does the rotation code do?
It is a number that decides how the players are ordered. Using the same code with the same names and settings gives the same chart, so you can reprint it. A new code gives a different order.
Does it work for sports other than soccer?
Yes. Any team sport with substitutes can use it, such as basketball, hockey, volleyball, softball or ultimate. Choose the period name and enter your own positions.
