PDF Page Size Inspector

Choose a PDF to see the size of each page and which pages are different.

Your files stay on your device. They are processed in your browser and are never uploaded to SumPanda.

Sizes are the visible page: the crop box if the file has one, otherwise the media box, with any turn applied, so a page turned 90 degrees swaps its width and height. A point is 1/72 inch. A paper name is shown when the size is within 1.5 points of a common paper size in either direction. The file is read on your device and nothing is uploaded.

How to use the pdf page size inspector

  1. Choose a PDF or drop it on the box. It can be up to 25 MB and 500 pages.
  2. Read the summary: the number of pages, how many different sizes it has, how many pages are turned and how many have a crop box.
  3. Check the table of runs, which groups consecutive pages with the same size, then the table with every page in points, inches and millimeters.
  4. Use Copy table or Download .csv to keep the list.

What is measured

A PDF page has a media box, the full sheet, and may have a crop box that a viewer uses to show only part of it. The page also may carry a rotation of 90, 180 or 270 degrees. The size shown here is what a viewer shows: the crop box if there is one, otherwise the media box, with the rotation applied. A page turned 90 degrees swaps its width and height.

Sizes are in points, which are 1/72 of an inch, so a US Letter page is 612 by 792 points, 8.5 by 11 inches or 215.9 by 279.4 millimeters. A paper name such as Letter, Legal, A4 or A3 appears when the size is within 1.5 points of a common paper size in either direction.

An example with mixed pages

Take a six-page file with two Letter pages, one A4 page in landscape (841.89 by 595.28 points), one page of 300 by 400 points turned 90 degrees, one A4-sized page with a 400 by 600 point crop box, and a Legal page. The page shows 612 by 792 for pages 1 and 2 as one run, A4 landscape for page 3, 400 by 300 for page 4 (the turned page), 400 by 600 for page 5 with the crop box flagged, and Legal for page 6. These sizes agree with the page sizes reported by pdf.js, a separate PDF reader.

This helps when a print shop rejects a file for mixed sizes, when a scan has a few oddly sized pages, or when you need to know whether to choose Letter or A4 before printing. To change the sizes, use the Resize PDF Page Size tool.

Limits and privacy

Password protected files cannot be read, and the page does not try to remove a password. A damaged file gets a readable error. The PDF is opened on your device and nothing is uploaded. To edit document properties, use the PDF Metadata Editor; to count pages in many files, the PDF Page Counter; and to reorder or remove pages, Organize PDF Pages.

Assumptions and limits

  • The PDF is not password protected and has between 1 and 500 pages.
  • Page size is the crop box if present, otherwise the media box, with any rotation applied.
  • A paper name is shown only when the size is within 1.5 points of a common paper size.
  • Content that lies outside the crop box is still in the file but is not part of the size shown.
  • The file is read on your device and nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a landscape page show the same paper name?

Paper names match in either direction, so Letter landscape is still Letter. The shape column says portrait or landscape.

What is the difference between points and pixels?

A point is 1/72 of an inch. A screen pixel size depends on the zoom level of the viewer, so the PDF stores sizes in points instead.

Why do two pages that look the same appear as different sizes?

They may differ by a fraction of a point, or one may be turned. The runs table treats sizes within 0.01 points as the same and keeps rotation separate.

Can I change the size here?

No, this page only reports sizes. Use the Resize PDF Page Size tool or your print settings to change them.
