How to use the pdf page counter
- Choose a PDF or drop it on the box. One file at a time, up to 25 MB and 500 pages.
- Read the number of pages, the file size and the PDF version at the top.
- Check the page sizes table, which groups pages of the same size and shows inches, millimeters, a matching paper name and any rotation.
- Use Copy summary to copy the details as plain text.
How the count and sizes are found
The page count is read from the file's page list, which is what PDF viewers use, so it matches the count you see when you open the file. Sizes come from each page's box in PDF points, 72 to an inch, and a page turned by 90 or 270 degrees is reported as it shows on screen, with width and height swapped.
A paper name appears when a page is within 2 points of a standard size, in portrait or landscape: US Letter, US Legal, Tabloid, A3, A4, A5 or B5. Anything else is shown as Custom. Consecutive pages with the same size and rotation are grouped, so a 200 page file with one odd page shows only a few rows.
Scans and text
A scanned PDF counts exactly like a typed one, because each scanned image is a page. The page count says nothing about whether the text can be searched. To look for words inside a file, use PDF text search, and to extract the text, use PDF to text.
Why check page sizes
Mixed sizes cause surprises when printing or combining files, and a file with mixed portrait and landscape pages can print on the wrong paper. Seeing the sizes first helps. To fix the order or rotation of pages, use organize PDF pages. The file is read in your browser, passwords are never guessed or removed, and nothing is uploaded.
Assumptions and limits
- The file is a normal PDF without a password, under 25 MB and 500 pages.
- Page sizes are rounded to two decimals in inches and one decimal in millimeters.
- The PDF version is read from the first line of the file and may differ from features used inside.
- The tool reports what is stored in the file. It does not render pages or check that their content is readable.
Frequently asked questions
How do I count the pages in a PDF?
Choose the file on this page. The number of pages is shown at the top, with the page sizes below. The file is read in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
Why does it list several page sizes?
Some files mix sizes, for example a Letter report with a Legal foldout or a rotated landscape page. Each run of pages with the same size and rotation gets its own row.
What do the paper names mean?
A name is shown when a page is within 2 points (about 0.03 inches) of a standard size. US Letter is 8.5 by 11 inches and A4 is 210 by 297 millimeters. Other sizes show as Custom.
Can it open a password-protected PDF?
No. It tells you the file is protected and does not try to guess or remove the password. Open it where it was made and save an unprotected copy.
