How to use the change pdf page size
- Choose a PDF or drop it on the box. All pages are processed on your device.
- Pick the new page size: Letter, Legal, Tabloid, A3, A4, A5, or a custom width and height in inches, millimeters or points.
- Choose the orientation. Match each page keeps landscape pages landscape and portrait pages portrait. Portrait or landscape forces one orientation for every page.
- Choose how to fit. Fit inside the page keeps everything and may leave blank bands. Fill crops the edges so the page is completely covered. Press Change page size and download.
Letter to A4 and back
A Letter page is 612 by 792 points. A4 is 210 by 297 millimeters, which is 595.28 by 841.89 points. To fit a Letter page inside A4 the tool uses the smaller of 595.28 divided by 612 and 841.89 divided by 792. That is 0.9727 against 1.0630, so the content is scaled to 97.3% and centered, with thin blank bands above and below.
In the other direction, an A4 page placed on Letter uses the smaller of 612 divided by 595.28 and 792 divided by 841.89, which is 1.0281 against 0.9407. The content is scaled to 94.1% and the bands appear at the sides.
Fit or fill
Fit inside the page is the safe choice for documents with text near the edges, such as contracts. Nothing is cut off. Fill is useful for pictures, posters and slides where you want no blank bands and can accept losing a strip at the edges. When fill crops pages, the result message says how many pages lost some edge.
Sizes used
US sizes are defined in inches: Letter is 8.5 by 11, Legal is 8.5 by 14 and Tabloid is 11 by 17. The ISO sizes are defined in millimeters: A3 is 297 by 420, A4 is 210 by 297 and A5 is 148 by 210. The tool converts these to points with 72 points per inch and 25.4 millimeters per inch. For other unit conversions, try the paper size converter.
This is a scaling tool. It does not reflow text, so a page that was laid out for Letter keeps its line breaks when shown on A4. To add room for binding afterward, use add margins to a PDF, and to put several resized pages on one sheet use the booklet and pages per sheet maker.
Assumptions and limits
- Each page is scaled uniformly, so shapes are never stretched. Proportions are kept.
- The new size may be between 18 and 14,400 points on each side.
- Links and form fields on the original pages are not carried over, because each page is placed as a vector copy on a new page.
- Pages with a rotation that is not a multiple of 90 degrees are refused with a message naming the page.
Frequently asked questions
How can I convert an A4 PDF so it prints well on US Letter paper?
Choose Letter as the new size and fit inside the page. The A4 content is reduced to about 94% and centered, so nothing is cut off when you print.
Does changing the page size make the text blurry?
No. Pages are placed as vector copies, so text and line art stay sharp at any scale. Scanned pages are pictures and stay as sharp as the scan was.
What is the difference between fit and fill?
Fit scales the page until all of it is visible and may leave empty bands. Fill scales it until the new page is covered and may cut off part of the edges.
Can I make a mixed-size PDF all the same size?
Yes. Pick one size and each page is scaled to it. With the orientation set to match each page, landscape pages stay landscape.
