How to use the online notepad
- Click in the box and start typing. The note is saved in this browser a moment after you stop.
- Watch the character, word and line counts under the box.
- Use Copy note to put the text on your clipboard, or Download .txt to save a file.
- Use Clear note to empty the box. It asks you to press the button twice so a stray click cannot wipe your note.
Where your note is kept
The note is stored only in this browser, on this device, in a place called local storage. It is not uploaded, there is no account, and other devices cannot see it. When you come back to the page in the same browser, the note is there again.
That also means the note can disappear. Clearing your browser data, using a private window, or a browser setting that blocks site storage will remove it. The page tells you if the browser refuses to save. If the note matters, download a copy or paste it somewhere you trust. Do not use a notepad like this for passwords, and remember anyone who uses the same browser profile on this device can open the page and read it.
Counts and limits
Characters are counted as visible characters, so an emoji counts once. Words are runs of text separated by spaces or line breaks, and lines are separated by line breaks. The note can hold up to 500,000 characters, which is far more than most notes need.
For writing that needs more structure, see the online to-do list tool, the kanban board and the word counter. The text line tools can sort, clean and count the lines of a note.
Saving and sharing
The downloaded file is plain text with the name note and the date. It contains exactly what you typed and nothing from the page. Copying uses your clipboard and adds nothing to the text either.
Assumptions and limits
- The note is stored in this browser's local storage only and is never uploaded.
- Clearing browser data or using a private window removes it.
- There is one note. Copy or download it before starting another.
- The limit is 500,000 characters.
Frequently asked questions
Is my note saved if I close the tab?
Yes, in the same browser on the same device, unless you clear your site data or use a private window. It is saved a moment after you stop typing.
Can I open my note on another device?
No. The note is not uploaded, so it exists only in the browser where you typed it. Download it or copy it to move it.
Is the notepad private?
It is stored on your device and never sent to a server. Anyone with access to your browser profile could still open the page and read it.
How do I save my note as a file?
Press Download .txt. The file contains the text exactly as you typed it.
Why do I have to press Clear twice?
The first press arms the button and the second one clears the note. That stops an accidental click from deleting your work.
