How to use the name tracing worksheet
- Choose what to practice: Names or words, Capital letters, Lowercase letters or Numbers 0 to 9.
- For names, type one name or word per line, up to eight lines. Letters, digits, spaces, hyphens, apostrophes and periods can be drawn.
- Pick a letter size, a dots or dashes tracing line, and how many tracing rows and blank practice rows each line gets. Keep Mark where each stroke starts on to show green start dots.
- Check the preview, then press Download PDF or Print. Print at 100 percent so the guide lines keep their size.
- Give the child a pencil or crayon, and have them follow the dots from the green start point, then write the name on the practice row.
How the letters are drawn
The letters come from a simple single-line handwriting style drawn for this tool, not from a font file, so nothing is downloaded and the tracing works offline once the page has loaded. Each letter is a set of strokes, lines and curves defined on a grid where capitals are 100 units tall, lowercase letters without ascenders are 55 units tall, and letters like g, j, p, q and y reach below the baseline. The tool places the strokes along a baseline and scales the whole line to the size you choose.
Dots are spaced evenly along each stroke, about 7.5 percent of the letter height apart, so the dot spacing grows with the letter size. A 0.75 inch letter has a dot about every 4 points, which is close enough that a young writer can follow the path. The dashes style draws short dashes along the same strokes instead of dots. The green dot marks the point where each stroke begins.
Because the letters are single-stroke shapes, they show the path the pencil follows rather than a decorative outline. They are not a copy of any school handwriting program, so if your child's school teaches a particular style, check that the letter shapes are close enough to it before you rely on this worksheet.
Guide lines and practice rows
Each row has a solid baseline, a dashed midline at the height of small letters and a light top line at capital height. Tracing rows show the dotted letters on these lines, and practice rows show only the lines, so the child can write the name unaided underneath. Up to four of each are allowed per line, and rows continue onto extra pages when a page is full.
Long names are shrunk so that the whole name fits on one line, never enlarged beyond the size you pick. The alphabet and number sheets use the same size for every line so the letters look consistent. Header options add a name and date line at the top of the page.
Privacy and limits
Names are typed into your browser and the worksheet is drawn there. Nothing is uploaded, which matters when the name belongs to a child. Accented letters, other alphabets and emoji cannot be drawn, and the tool tells you which characters to remove. For ruled writing pages without tracing, try the lined paper generator.
Assumptions and limits
- The letters are a simple single-line style made for this tool. They do not match any particular school handwriting program.
- Only the letters A to Z in both cases, the digits 0 to 9, spaces, hyphens, apostrophes and periods can be drawn. Other characters are rejected with a message.
- Letter sizes are 0.5, 0.75 and 1 inch for capital height, and long lines are shrunk to fit the width of the page.
- Dot spacing depends on the letter size, so very small settings use closer dots and printing at 100 percent matters.
Frequently asked questions
Can I trace my child's name with this?
Yes. Type the name on a line, choose a letter size and print. Each letter appears as dots with a green start point, and you can add blank practice rows underneath for writing the name without help.
Does it use a downloaded font?
No. The letters are strokes defined inside the tool and drawn in your browser, so there is nothing to install or download, and no file is fetched when you make the worksheet.
Why are some characters not accepted?
The built-in letter set covers A to Z, digits, spaces, hyphens, apostrophes and periods. Accented letters, other alphabets and emoji have no drawn strokes, so the tool asks you to remove them rather than print a gap.
Can I print the whole alphabet?
Yes. Choose Capital letters or Lowercase letters under Practice, and you get three lines of up to nine letters each, with tracing and practice rows. Numbers 0 to 9 have their own option.
Is the child's name sent anywhere?
No. The worksheet is drawn and the PDF is made in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded or stored unless you use the browser's own features.
