How to use the webcam test
- Press Start camera. Your browser asks whether this page may use the camera. Choose Allow. The question appears only after you press the button.
- Look at the live picture. If it shows you, the camera, its driver and the browser permission are all working. The list under it shows the camera name, the picture size, the speed in frames per second and which way the camera faces when the device reports it.
- If you have more than one camera, choose another one from the Camera list. The picture switches to it. Tick or untick Mirror the picture to flip the view left to right.
- Press Stop camera when you are done. The camera light should go out. Closing the tab also stops the camera.
What this test checks
The test asks the browser for the same video stream a video call would use and shows it in a frame on the page. A live picture means the camera is connected, switched on, allowed for this site and not blocked by another app. It does not judge picture quality. Look at sharpness, color and brightness yourself.
The picture size and speed come from the settings the camera reports to the browser. A camera may support several sizes, and a call app can ask for a different one, so treat these numbers as a quick check rather than a measurement of the best the camera can do.
Privacy
The page never records, saves, screenshots or uploads anything. The picture is drawn on screen and discarded. The page also makes no request to a server with camera data, and the camera is requested only after you press the button, never when the page loads.
If the camera does not start
If you blocked the camera once, the browser remembers it. Open the site settings for this page, usually from the icon beside the address, set the camera to allow, and press Start camera again. On a computer, also check the operating system privacy settings for camera access, close apps that may be using the camera such as a conferencing program, and look for a physical privacy shutter or a keyboard key that switches the camera off.
To check the other half of a call setup, try the microphone test. To check the screen you will share, see the screen resolution checker or the dead pixel test.
Assumptions and limits
- Camera access works only on secure (HTTPS) pages and in browsers that support it. Some older browsers and embedded browsers do not.
- The device names shown are what the browser reports. They are blank until permission is granted, so unnamed cameras are numbered.
- Frame rate and size are the values the browser reports for the current stream and may differ from what other apps get.
- Nothing is recorded, so there is no playback or snapshot feature.
Frequently asked questions
How do I test whether my webcam works?
Press Start camera, allow access when the browser asks, and look for a live picture of yourself. If a picture appears, the camera, driver and permission are working.
Does the webcam test record or upload my video?
No. The picture is shown on the page while the test runs and is not stored or sent anywhere. Stopping the test or closing the tab ends the camera session.
Why does the page say my camera is blocked?
Either you chose Block when asked, or your system privacy settings stop the browser from using the camera. Allow the camera for this site in the browser settings, check the system settings, and try again.
Why is my picture reversed?
Mirroring is on by default because that is how most people expect a video call preview to look. Untick the mirror option to see the picture as others see it.
