How to use the sum numbers in text calculator
- Paste or type text that contains numbers, such as a receipt, a log or notes.
- Choose the number style that matches your text: 1,234.56, 1.234,56, 1 234,56 or 1234.56.
- Tick or clear the box for brackets as negatives, and the box that skips numbers glued to a letter, like A12.
- Read the sum, count, mean, smallest and largest, and check the list of every number the page used.
Formula
each number found is turned into a whole number of its smallest decimal place
sum = exact integer total / 10^(most decimals)
mean = sum / count, rounded to 6 decimals
Adding as whole numbers avoids floating point errors, so 0.1 + 0.2 is exactly 0.3. A minus sign directly before a number, or brackets with the box ticked, makes it negative.
A small receipt
The text reads: Receipt A14: coffee 4.50, bagel 3.25, tip 1.20. Refund (2.75). Total items: 3 at 1,200.00 each shipped in 2 boxes. Temperature fell by -4.5 degrees. With the skip box ticked, A14 is ignored, and eight numbers are found: 4.50, 3.25, 1.20, -2.75, 3, 1,200.00, 2 and -4.5.
The sum is 1,206.70, the mean is 150.8375, the smallest is -4.50 and the largest is 1,200.00. The negative numbers add to -7.25. Clearing the skip box also counts the 14, for a sum of 1,220.70.
What counts as a number
A number is a run of digits with optional thousands separators and a decimal part in the style you chose. In the plain style, 1,234 is read as two numbers, 1 and 234, because a comma is not a thousands mark there. Dates such as 2024-01-05 give three numbers, 2024, 1 and 5, and a phone number gives several. The list shows exactly what was used, so you can spot unwanted ones.
Checking before you rely on the sum
The page cannot know which numbers you meant, so scan the list. For a clean column of numbers, use the Average Calculator, and to pull emails and links out of text, see the Extract Emails and URLs from Text tool. Everything runs in your browser and the text is not saved or sent.
Assumptions and limits
- Numbers use the style you choose for thousands and decimals.
- Percent signs and currency symbols next to a number are ignored, and the number is counted.
- Up to 200,000 characters and 5,000 numbers are handled.
- Spelled-out numbers like "twelve" are not read.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the sum exact?
Every value is converted to a whole number of its smallest decimal place and added as an integer, so there is no rounding error from binary fractions.
How are negative numbers found?
A minus sign directly in front of a digit, with no letter or digit before it, makes the number negative. With the box ticked, a number in brackets also counts as negative.
What does the skip box do?
It ignores numbers that come straight after a letter, such as the 12 in A12 or the 2 in v2. Clear the box to count them.
Why did it find numbers in my dates?
Dates contain numbers, and the tool cannot tell a date from a quantity. Each part is counted separately. Remove the dates from the text first if you do not want them.
