Chat Export Analyzer

Choose an exported chat text file to count messages and words for each person.

Your files stay on your device. They are processed in your browser and are never uploaded to SumPanda.

Choose a file above or paste the text here. Up to 4,000,000 characters. Nothing is uploaded.

A date such as 3/4/25 can be March 4 or April 3. The tool looks for a day above 12 to decide, and uses month first when nothing decides.

Each message starts with a date and a time, either as 12/31/24, 9:15 PM - Name: text or as [31/12/2024, 21:15:03] Name: text. A line with no date at the start belongs to the message above it. A line without a sender, such as a notice that someone joined, is counted as a system line and left out of the totals. Words are pieces of text between spaces that hold a letter or a digit, and media placeholders such as Media omitted are counted as media and not as words. Everything is counted on your device and the text is not uploaded, and the result is a count and not a judgment of anyone in the chat.

Next step

How to use the chat export analyzer

  1. Export a chat from your messaging app as a text file, without media, and choose it here, or paste the text into the box.
  2. If the dates look wrong, set the order of the dates to month first or day first.
  3. Read the summary: messages, words, media messages, active days, the first and last dates, and the busiest hour and weekday.
  4. Use the tables for each sender, each hour and each weekday, and download the sender table as CSV.

What the tool reads

Each message starts with a date and a time, either in the style 12/31/24, 9:15 PM - Name: text or in the style [31/12/2024, 21:15:03] Name: text. A line with no date at the start belongs to the message above it, so a message that runs over several lines is counted once. A line that has a date but no sender, such as a notice that someone joined, is a system line and is left out of the totals.

Words are pieces of text between spaces that contain a letter or a digit, so a lone dash or a string of marks is not a word. Markers such as Media omitted are counted as media messages and add no words. The share column is each sender's part of all messages, and words per message is based on the messages that are not media.

Month first or day first

A date such as 3/4/25 can mean March 4 or April 3. The tool looks through all the dates in the file: a first number above 12 means day first, and a second number above 12 means month first. If nothing decides it, the tool uses month first and says so in the summary. You can override the choice with the control above the results.

For the words themselves, the Word Frequency Counter ranks the most used ones and the Word Counter counts any text. Spreadsheet work on the sender table can start from the CSV and JSON Converter, and family tree files are handled by the GEDCOM to CSV Converter.

Privacy and limits

The text is analyzed in your browser and is not uploaded. A chat holds other people's words, so think about who should see the result before you share it. Only the counts are shown or downloaded, and the message text itself is not copied into the result.

Files must be plain text. ZIP archives, PDFs, images and files with binary data are turned away with a message, and text longer than 4,000,000 characters is refused. The counts describe how a chat looks, and they say nothing about the people in it.

Assumptions and limits

  • The export has the date, time and sender at the start of each message, in one of the common layouts.
  • Times are in the clock of the phone that made the export, with no time zone conversion.
  • A sender name is everything before the first colon and space after the time.
  • Words and messages are counted as described, and no ranking or judgment of any kind is applied.

Frequently asked questions

How do I export a chat?

Most messaging apps have an export or share option in the chat menu that writes a text file. Choose the option without media, and the exact menu depends on the app and version.

Why are some messages missing from the count?

Lines without a sender are treated as system notices, and lines with a date that does not make sense are skipped. The summary shows how many system lines were left out.

Does the tool work for group chats?

Yes. Every sender gets a row in the table, sorted by the number of messages. Names are used as they appear in the file, so a person who changed their name may appear twice.

Why does the busiest hour use the time in the file?

The tool does not know where anyone was, so it counts by the clock time written in the export. Messages sent from other time zones are shown by the phone's own clock.
