How this was calculated
  1. A word is any run of characters between spaces that has at least one letter or digit, so a lone dash or symbol does not count.
  2. The heading line itself is not counted. Text before the first heading is listed as its own part.
  3. Pages = words / words per page. Reading time = words / words per minute.
  • Word processors count slightly differently for hyphenated words and numbers. Use this for planning and compare totals with your editor.

How to use the chapter word count breakdown tool

  1. Paste the manuscript, or part of it, with a heading line before each chapter.
  2. Choose how a chapter starts: a # heading, a # or ## heading, a Chapter line, or a marker you type.
  3. Set the words per page and the reading speed you use. Both start as examples.
  4. Read the words, pages and reading time for each chapter, and download the table.

Formula

Words = pieces of text between spaces that hold at least one letter or digit

Pages = words / words per page

Reading time = words / words per minute

The heading line itself is not counted. Text before the first heading is listed as its own part.

Three short chapters

The sample has chapters of 103, 148 and 74 words, 325 words in all. At 250 words a page that is 0.4, 0.6 and 0.3 pages, 1.3 pages in all, and at 230 words a minute it takes about 1.4 minutes to read. The average chapter is 108 words, the longest is Chapter 2: The Letter with 148 words and the shortest is Chapter 3: Rain with 74.

Switching to a Chapter line style finds headings such as Chapter One, Prologue and Epilogue, even without a # in front. A custom marker such as *** finds every line that starts with those characters.

What counts as a word

A word is any run of characters between spaces that contains a letter or a digit. A lone dash, a symbol or a row of dots is not a word. A hyphenated word such as tool-box counts once, and a number such as 3 counts once. Word processors count in nearly the same way, but they may differ by a few words on hyphens and symbols, so compare the totals once and then use this tool for the shape of the book.

Seeing the length of each chapter shows pacing problems that the total hides. A book with chapters of 3,000 words and one of 12,000 words has a rhythm that readers feel, even if they could not say why.

Pages and reading time

Words per page depends on the font, the page size and the layout, so the 250 in the example is just a common planning figure. Enter the one your publisher, your teacher or your own layout gives. Reading speed also varies, and 230 words a minute is an example for silent reading of fiction. For the whole piece, the Word Counter gives characters, sentences and more, and the Word Count to Pages Converter does the pages. The Essay Word Count Planner plans how many words to write each day, and the Audiobook Listening Time Calculator estimates the length of a recording. To work with highlights from a book you read, see the Kindle Clippings Converter.

Assumptions and limits

  • Chapters are found by their heading lines. A heading that is not on its own line is not found.
  • Words per page and reading speed are examples. Set them to your own figures.
  • Up to 2,000,000 characters are read, and the table shows the first 300 parts.
  • The sample is a made-up story written for the demonstration.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my total different from my word processor?

Word processors treat hyphens, symbols and numbers a little differently. A small difference is normal.

What happens to text before the first chapter?

It is counted as Before the first heading, so title pages and notes are not lost or added to a chapter.

Can I split on lines like Part One?

Yes. Choose A marker you type and enter Part. Every line that starts with that text begins a new part.

Are sub-headings counted as chapters?

Not if you choose A # heading. A ## heading then counts as ordinary text inside its chapter.
