Split PDF and Extract Pages

Pull the pages you need out of a PDF, or break it into smaller files, entirely on your device.

Your files stay on your device. They are processed in your browser and are never uploaded to SumPanda.

What do you want to do?

Separate pages and ranges with commas. Pages come out in the order you type them, and repeats are ignored. Use 7- for page 7 to the end.

Next step

How to use the split pdf and extract pages

  1. Choose one PDF. The tool shows its page count, which is the highest page number you can use.
  2. Pick a mode. Extract page ranges makes one PDF from the pages you list, Split into files of N pages cuts the document into equal parts, and Save every page as its own PDF makes one file per page.
  3. For extraction, type pages and ranges such as 1-3, 5, 8-10. For splitting every N pages, type N.
  4. Select Create files. A single result downloads as a PDF. Several results arrive together in one zip file.

How page ranges are read

Separate items with commas. A single number is one page, and two numbers joined by a hyphen are a range that includes both ends. Write 7- to mean page 7 through the last page. Spaces are ignored, and typographic dashes pasted from a document count as hyphens.

For extraction, pages come out in the order you type them, so 5, 1-2 puts page 5 first. A page you list twice appears once, at its first position, and the tool tells you how many repeats it ignored. If something is wrong, you get a specific message, such as which page does not exist, which item is not a number, or which range runs backward, and nothing is created until the entry is valid.

What each mode produces

File names are built from your original name so they sort correctly after you unzip them.

  • Extract gives one file named like report-pages-1-3_5_8-10.pdf.
  • Every N pages gives files such as report-pages-1-2.pdf, report-pages-3-4.pdf and report-pages-5.pdf. The last file holds the remainder. If N is as large as the page count, the tool explains that nothing would be split.
  • Each page gives report-page-01.pdf, report-page-02.pdf and so on, padded so they sort in page order.

How it works in your browser

The PDF is opened in your browser with the pdf-lib library. For every output file, the tool creates a new document and copies the chosen pages into it, keeping their size, rotation and content. The zip is assembled in memory with fflate. Your document is never uploaded and SumPanda never sees its name or content.

Limits and honest caveats

Because everything happens in browser memory, there are firm limits.

  • One PDF of up to 25 MB and 500 pages at a time.
  • Password-protected PDFs are refused. The tool does not try to remove or guess passwords.
  • Each output file carries its own copy of resources it needs, such as fonts and images. When you split a document with large shared images into many pieces, the total size of the pieces can be much bigger than the original. The tool stops if the combined output would pass 400 MB.
  • Bookmarks, form logic, signatures and document tags are not guaranteed to survive. A signed PDF stops being validly signed once pages are copied out of it.

Related tasks

To put the pieces back together or combine them with other files, use the merge PDF tool. To rotate or delete pages by looking at thumbnails instead of typing numbers, use organize PDF pages. To turn pages into pictures, use the PDF to image converter.

Assumptions and limits

  • The PDF is processed on your device. Nothing is uploaded, stored or logged.
  • Page numbers are physical positions in the file (1 is the first page), not the page labels printed on the pages.
  • Pages keep their original size and rotation. Content is copied, not re-rendered or compressed.
  • Limits are one file up to 25 MB and 500 pages, with a 400 MB cap on combined output held in memory.
  • Signatures, bookmarks and form logic may not carry over to the new files.

Frequently asked questions

How do I extract pages 2 to 4 and page 9 from a PDF?

Choose Extract page ranges and type 2-4, 9. The result is one PDF with those four pages in that order.

Can I extract pages in a different order than the original?

Yes. Pages are written in the order you list them, so typing 9, 2-4 puts page 9 first. Use this for simple reordering of a few pages, or open the organize tool to move thumbnails.

Why is the zip bigger than my original PDF?

Every output PDF has to contain the fonts and images its pages use. If many pages share one large image, each separate file stores its own copy, so the files add up to more than the original.

Does splitting remove the password or restrictions from a PDF?

No. Protected PDFs are rejected with a message. This tool only works with files that open without a password.

What does the tool do with the 1-3 pre-filled in the box?

It is only a starting example once a file loads. Replace it with the pages you want. Nothing runs until you select the button.
