How to use the spelling test template
- Type your title and your words, one per line.
- Choose what to print: a student sheet (numbered lines), an answer key, or both.
- Pick the line spacing and one or two columns, and tick the box to add lines for name, date and score.
- Check the preview, then use Download PDF or Print.
What the sheet looks like
The student sheet has a numbered line for each word and does not show the words, because the teacher reads them aloud. If the box for name, date and score is ticked, the page begins with those three lines, and the score line already shows the total, such as "/ 10". Roomy spacing gives more space for younger writers.
The answer key lists the words in numbered order in two columns, with a mint band for the title, so it is easy to tell apart from the student sheet when you print both. The "Sheet and key" option prints the student pages first, then the key.
How many words fit
With normal spacing, about 20 lines fit on a page with the header lines and 21 without, and two columns double that. A list of up to 60 words is supported, and the page says how many pages the result takes. Longer lists can be split into two tests.
To build practice material for the same words, use the vocabulary quiz maker, the flashcard maker, the name tracing worksheet or the lined paper generator.
Fonts, saving and privacy
The sheet uses a standard sans-serif font. Characters outside the basic Latin alphabet, such as some accented letters and other scripts, may not print, and the page tells you when that happens. You can tick Remember my entries to keep your list in this browser only. Nothing is uploaded.
Assumptions and limits
- The list must have at least one word and at most 60 words.
- Pages are US Letter size. Other paper sizes are not offered.
- The words are not checked for spelling or difficulty.
- Saving in the browser stores only your entries on this device, and you can untick the box to delete the saved copy.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a spelling test?
Type your words one per line, choose the student sheet and answer key, and print or download the PDF. The student sheet has numbered lines only, so the words stay secret until you read them.
Can I print an answer key too?
Yes. Choose Sheet and key to print both, or Answer key only if you already have the student sheets. The key lists each word next to its number.
How many words can I use?
Up to 60. One page holds about 20 words with the header, and 21 without it. Two columns hold twice as many.
Does it save my word list?
Only if you tick Remember my entries, and then only in this browser on this device. Nothing is uploaded, and unticking the box removes the saved copy.
