How to use the simple gradebook
- Under Categories and weights, list the kinds of work, such as Homework, Quizzes and Exams, and the percent of the final grade each is worth.
- Under Assignments, add each piece of work with its category and the points possible. Then add your Students.
- Type each score in the Scores table. Leave a box empty for work that is not graded or a student who was excused. An empty box is left out, it is not counted as zero.
- Read the averages table: each category percent, the weighted Final and the letter. Edit the letter grade scale if your school uses different cutoffs.
- Press Print or Download PDF for a landscape report, Download CSV for a spreadsheet, or Copy averages for a short text summary.
How the weighted grade is calculated
For each category the tool adds up the points a student earned and the points possible on the work that has a score, then divides: earned over possible, as a percent. Homework with scores of 9 out of 10 and 18 out of 20 is 27 out of 30, which is 90 percent. Adding all the points first, rather than averaging each assignment percent, means a 100 point exam counts for more than a 10 point quiz inside the same category.
The final grade multiplies each category percent by its weight, adds the results and divides by the total of the weights used. With Homework at 20, Quizzes at 30 and Exams at 50, a student with 90, 80 and 86 percent gets (20 x 90 + 30 x 80 + 50 x 86) / 100, which is 85.00 percent. The calculation uses exact fractions and rounds only the displayed results, half up, to two decimals.
If a category has no scores yet for a student, it is left out for that student and the remaining weights are scaled to 100. For example, with 100 percent in Homework (weight 20) and 96.67 percent in Exams (weight 50) and no quiz scores, the final is 97.62 percent. This shows the grade so far, so it will change as the missing work is entered. If your weights do not add up to 100, they are scaled to 100 in the same way.
Letter grades
The scale has one line per letter, the letter followed by its lowest percent: A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60, F 0 by default. You can add plus and minus grades such as B+ 87.5. The lowest line must start at 0 so that every score gets a letter. A student receives the first letter whose cutoff their rounded final percent meets or beats, so exactly 80.00 percent earns the B and 79.99 does not.
Letters are judged on the rounded two decimal percent that is displayed, so what you see is what is graded. A value of 89.995 shows as 90.00 and earns the A. Schools differ on rounding and cutoffs, so use your own policy and treat the result as a worksheet, not an official record.
Privacy and limits
Student names and scores stay in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and the PDF and CSV are made on your device. If you tick Remember, the gradebook is saved in this browser only, so use that on a device you control and untick it on a shared computer. A gradebook holds up to 8 categories, 20 assignments and 60 students.
This tool does not handle dropped lowest scores, late penalties, curved grades, attendance or parent reports, and it is not connected to any school system. For a single student working out a needed exam score, use the grade calculator instead.
Assumptions and limits
- Scores and points possible may have up to two decimals. Scores above the points possible count as extra credit, and negative scores are not accepted.
- An empty score box means not graded or excused. It is excluded from the category instead of counting as zero, so enter 0 for work that was turned in and earned nothing.
- The final grade is a grade so far when some categories have no scores. Categories with no scores are left out and the remaining weights are scaled to 100.
- No dropping, curving or late penalties are modeled. Rounding is half up to two decimals, and letters use the rounded percent.
- Everything is saved only in this browser when Remember is ticked. It is not a school record and does not sync between devices.
Frequently asked questions
Does an empty score count as zero?
No. An empty box is treated as not graded or excused and left out of the category. If a student turned in nothing and you want a zero, type 0. This keeps the grade so far fair while the term is still running.
How is the final grade weighted?
Each category percent is multiplied by its weight, the results are added, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights that have scores. With 20, 30 and 50 weights and category percents of 90, 80 and 86, the final is 85.00 percent.
Can I use plus and minus letter grades?
Yes. Edit the scale to include lines like A- 90 and B+ 87. Each line is a letter and its lowest percent, and the lowest line must start at 0 so every student gets a letter.
Is student data uploaded anywhere?
No. Names and scores stay in your browser and are only saved on your device if you tick Remember. Untick it on a shared computer, and download a CSV if you need a file copy.
What is the difference between this and a grade calculator?
A grade calculator works out one person's grade or the score needed on a final. This gradebook keeps a whole class with weighted categories, so you can compare students and print or export the results.
