How to use the multiplication table printable

      1. Type a title and choose the chart size, from 2 up to 20. A size of 12 makes a 12 by 12 chart.
      2. Choose Filled in for a finished reference chart or Blank to fill in for practice.
      3. Optionally enter a times table to highlight, which shades its row and column, and tick the box to shade the square numbers.
      4. Print the page or download the PDF.

      Formula

      Square at row r and column c = r x c

Last square = size x size

Every number on the chart is produced by multiplying the row number by the column number, so the filled chart is exact for any size.

      A 12 by 12 chart

In the default chart the square where row 7 meets column 8 holds 56, and the same number sits where row 8 meets column 7. The bottom right corner, where row 12 meets column 12, shows 144.

Entering 7 as the table to highlight shades row 7 and column 7 in gold, and ticking the square numbers shades 1, 4, 9, 16 and so on down the diagonal. A size of 20 makes a 20 by 20 chart whose last square is 400.

      How the chart is drawn

The first row and the first column hold the numbers being multiplied, and every other square holds their product. The chart is drawn as a square grid centered on a US Letter page and scaled to fit, so a larger chart simply has smaller squares. Text is sized to the square so that three digit products at size 20 still fit.

The blank version leaves the squares empty and keeps the row and column headings, which is handy for practice sheets. Because the chart is symmetric, the numbers above the diagonal are the same as those below it.

      Ways to use it

Keep the filled chart beside a child as a reference while they work through problems, or print the blank chart and have them fill it in a section at a time. Highlighting one table makes it easy to focus on a single set of facts. The page makes no claims about learning outcomes. It is a printed grid of products.

For printed practice problems, the math worksheet generator makes pages of arithmetic. For checking a product, the scientific calculator is always at hand. Everything is made in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored on a server.

      Assumptions and limits

      • The chart size is a whole number from 2 to 20.
      • Every product is exact. It is the row number times the column number.
      • The page is US Letter, portrait, with the chart scaled to fit.
      • The highlighted table must be within the chart size.

      Frequently asked questions

How big can the multiplication chart be?

Up to 20 by 20. At that size the chart has 400 squares and the last one holds 400.

Can I print a blank chart for practice?

Yes. Choose Blank to fill in. The row and column numbers stay and the squares are left empty.

What does highlighting a table do?

It shades the row and the column for the number you enter, so that table's products stand out against the rest of the chart.

Why is the chart the same on both sides of the diagonal?

Multiplication gives the same product in either order, so 7 times 8 and 8 times 7 are both 56.
