How this was calculated
  1. Start from the known pay date and step 14 days at a time, forward and backward, so every pay date in the range is on the same schedule.
  2. Count the pay dates that fall in each calendar month.
  3. A month with 3 pay dates gets an extra paycheck. A year has 26 or 27 pay dates, so the extra ones are two or three months a year with three.
  • Dates assume your employer pays on the exact schedule. If a pay date moves for a weekend or holiday, the month it lands in can change.

Formula

pay dates = known date + k x 14 days (or 7 days) for every whole k

count the pay dates in each calendar month

extra month: more than 2 (biweekly) or more than 4 (weekly) pay dates

A year has 365 or 366 days, which holds 26 full 14 day cycles with one or two days left over, so a biweekly schedule has 26 or 27 pay dates a year and two or three months with three. Weekly pay has 52 or 53 dates and four or five months with five.

Biweekly pay starting Friday, January 2, 2026

Counting every 14 days from January 2, 2026, 2026 has 26 pay dates and two months with three of them: January (2, 16 and 30) and July (3, 17 and 31). 2027 has 27 pay dates because the schedule starts on January 1, and three months bring three paychecks: January, July and December.

2028 goes back to 26 pay dates, with extra paychecks in June and December. Over the three years that is 79 paychecks and 7 months with an extra one. Switching to weekly pay gives 13 months with five paychecks over the same three years.

Why the extra months move around

Because a biweekly cycle is 14 days and months are 28 to 31 days long, the pay dates slide later in the calendar a little each year. A month with three pay dates needs the first one early: on day 1 to 3 of a 31 day month, day 1 or 2 of a 30 day month, or day 1 of a 29 day February. A plain 28 day February can never have three.

That is why the same two months repeat for a while and then change, and why a year with 27 pay dates adds a third month to the list.

Planning for the extra paycheck

Bills are often due monthly, so an extra paycheck is money that your monthly budget did not count on. Many people plan their budget on 24 or 26 paychecks worth of income and treat the extra one as a bonus for savings or debt.

Use the Pay Period Calendar for a year in full, and the Paycheck Split Calculator to divide a paycheck into goals.

Assumptions and limits

  • The schedule is exact: every pay date is the same number of days from the known date.
  • Pay dates that your employer moves for weekends or holidays are not moved here, which can shift a date into the next or previous month.
  • Twice a month and monthly schedules never have extra paychecks, so they are not offered.
  • Dates use calendar days only. No time zones are involved.
  • The scan covers up to 10 years from 1990 to 2100.

Frequently asked questions

How many months have three paychecks on a biweekly schedule?

Either two or three months a year. A year with 26 pay dates has two such months, and a year with 27 pay dates has three.

Does my employer really pay on those dates?

Only if the schedule is a strict 14 day or 7 day cycle. Some employers move the date when it falls on a holiday, so check your pay stub calendar for the exact dates.

Why does the first date matter if I only want the months?

The pattern depends on where the cycle starts. Any real pay date works, because the page counts forward and backward from it to cover your range.

Is there an extra paycheck with semi-monthly pay?

No. Semi-monthly pay has two fixed dates a month and always 24 paychecks a year, so no month gets a third paycheck.
