How to use the contract renewal and notice date tracker

  1. Choose the date to count from. It starts as today.
  2. Add a row for each contract with a name, the date it ends or renews and the notice period in days.
  3. Read the contracts sorted by deadline, with the last day to give notice, the days remaining and the end date.
  4. Download the CSV if you want to put the dates into a calendar or a spreadsheet.

Formula

Last day to give notice = end date - notice days

Days remaining = last day to give notice - the date you count from

Days are calendar days. A deadline that falls on a weekend or a holiday is not moved.

Four contracts ending in 2030

An internet service ending on March 15, 2030 with 30 days of notice has a deadline of Wednesday, February 13, 2030. A software license ending on June 30, 2030 with 60 days of notice must be cancelled by Wednesday, May 1, 2030. An office lease ending on September 30, 2030 with 90 days of notice has a deadline of Tuesday, July 2, 2030, and an insurance policy ending on November 1, 2030 with 45 days of notice must be cancelled by Tuesday, September 17, 2030.

The table lists them in that order, because the soonest deadline comes first, and shows how many days are left from the date you chose. A deadline in the past is marked as days ago and is counted in the stats as passed.

Why notice dates catch people out

Many subscriptions and service contracts renew by themselves for another term unless you tell the provider in advance. The deadline is before the end of the contract, not on it, and it can be weeks or months earlier. Missing it can mean paying for another year. A list sorted by deadline puts the next action first and makes it easy to set a reminder a week before.

The notice period is counted in calendar days here. Some contracts count business days, or say the notice must be received and not just sent. Check the wording of each contract. The Business Days Calculator handles notice that is counted in working days.

Assumptions and limits

  • The end date is the date the contract ends or renews, as the contract states it.
  • The notice period is a whole number of calendar days, and the deadline is the end date minus those days.
  • The example contracts are made up and dated in 2030. Replace them with yours.
  • This is simple date arithmetic and not legal advice. Read your contract.

Frequently asked questions

What does 0 days remaining mean?

It means the deadline is the date you are counting from. Today is the last day to give notice.

Can I add more than four contracts?

Yes, add as many as you need, up to 40.

What if my contract counts notice in months?

Convert it to the end date minus the months first, or enter the number of days between the two dates.

Why is a past deadline still in the list?

So that you can see it. The stats count it as passed, and the days column shows how long ago it was.
