How to use the year progress calculator

  1. Pick a date, or use Today to start from the current date.
  2. Read the share of the year finished at the top, and the day of the year and days left below it.
  3. Check the calendar quarter the date falls in, how far through that quarter you are, and how far through the month.
  4. Use Copy or Print to keep the result, or copy the share link to open it on another device.

Formula

day of year = days from January 1 to the date, plus 1

share of year = day of year / days in year x 100

days in year = 365, or 366 in a leap year

share of quarter = day of quarter / days in quarter x 100

The date itself counts as finished, so January 1 is day 1 and December 31 is 100%. Quarters are calendar quarters: January to March, April to June, July to September and October to December.

October 12, 2026

October 12, 2026 is day 285 of 365, so the year is 285 / 365 = 78.08% done with 80 days left. The date sits in the fourth quarter, which runs October 1 to December 31 and has 92 days. It is day 12 of the quarter, so the quarter is 13.04% done, and the month is 12 / 31 = 38.71% done.

In a leap year the same idea uses 366 days. February 29, 2028 is day 60 of 366, which is 16.39%, and day 60 of the first quarter, which has 91 days in a leap year, so the quarter is 65.93% done.

What the percentage is good for

A quick progress figure helps with yearly goals: if a target is a number of workouts, pages or savings, comparing the share of the target done with the share of the year done shows whether you are on pace. It also frames a deadline, since saying that a project has used 78% of the year is easier to picture than a day count.

The figure counts calendar days, not business days. To count working days instead, use the business days calculator.

Calendar quarters and fiscal quarters

This page uses calendar quarters. Many companies and governments use a fiscal year that starts in another month, which shifts every quarter. The fiscal quarter calendar lists quarters by month for a chosen start, and the days between dates calculator measures any other span.

Assumptions and limits

  • Years are counted on the Gregorian calendar, with leap years every fourth year except century years not divisible by 400.
  • The chosen date counts as a completed day, so the share is never 0% for a real date.
  • The date is a calendar date. Time of day and time zones are not used.
  • Fiscal years, academic years and other calendars are not modeled.

Frequently asked questions

What percent of the year is it today?

Pick Today in the date box. The page divides the day of the year by the number of days in the year, counting today as finished, so the answer is the share of the year completed at the end of today.

How many days are left in the year?

It is the days in the year minus the day of the year. On December 31 the answer is 0, and on January 1 it is 364 in a common year or 365 in a leap year.

Which quarter is a date in?

Months 1 to 3 are the first quarter, 4 to 6 the second, 7 to 9 the third and 10 to 12 the fourth. The page shows the first and last day of the quarter next to the quarter number.

Why does the month share use days and not weeks?

A month is not a whole number of weeks, so the page divides the day of the month by the number of days in that month. February in a leap year therefore has 29 days in the calculation.
