How to use the when to leave for the airport calculator
- Enter the time your flight departs.
- Enter how early you want to be at the airport. The starting 120 minutes is an example. Your airline or airport may suggest a different time for your flight.
- Enter your travel time to the airport, and any time for parking, a shuttle or drop off. Add an extra cushion for delays.
- Read the time to leave home, and the timeline of steps. If the answer is before midnight, it says "the day before". Use Copy or Print to keep the plan.
Formula
Total time = early arrival + travel + parking + cushion
Leave time = departure time - total time
Leave time is counted back from the departure of the flight, not from the time you want to be at the gate. Times that fall before midnight are shown as the day before.
A 2:30 PM flight
For a flight that departs at 2:30 PM, with 120 minutes early at the airport, 35 minutes of travel, 15 minutes for parking and a 10 minute cushion, the total is 120 + 35 + 15 + 10 = 180 minutes. That is 3 hours, so you leave at 11:30 AM.
The timeline then reads: leave home 11:30 AM, reach the airport area 12:05 PM, reach the terminal 12:20 PM, and your target arrival of 120 minutes before departure is 12:30 PM. The cushion is the 10 minutes between reaching the terminal and your target. For a 1:00 AM flight the same total gives 10:00 PM, the day before.
What to put in each box
The early arrival time is the one that depends on your airline, the airport, the time of day, and whether you check a bag. Airlines publish check-in and bag drop deadlines, and security lines can be longer at busy hours. Use the number you trust for your trip, not the starting example.
Travel time should be for the hour you will really drive, not an empty road. Add time for parking, shuttles, returning a rental car and walking, which can take longer than the drive itself at a large airport. A cushion covers delays you cannot predict, such as traffic or a slow line.
Planning the rest of the trip
If you are flying across time zones, use the time zone converter to read the departure and arrival in the right place, and the time calculator to add up durations. A packing list can be done the day before, so the morning is only about leaving.
For the rest of the budget, the trip budget planner tracks costs. Remember that this tool only does the arithmetic of counting back. It does not check flight status, traffic or deadlines, so confirm those with your airline close to the day.
Assumptions and limits
- All times are on the clock of the place where you start. Time zone changes are not modeled.
- The early arrival, travel, parking and cushion are the numbers you enter. The tool does not know airline or airport rules.
- Leave time is shown in 12 hour format, and "the day before" appears when the result is before midnight.
- No live data about traffic, security lines or flight delays is used.
Frequently asked questions
How early should I get to the airport?
That depends on the airline, the airport, whether you check a bag and the time of day, so check the airline's guidance for your flight. The tool uses the number you enter.
What time should I leave home for a 2:30 PM flight?
With the example numbers, 11:30 AM. That is 120 minutes early at the airport, plus 35 minutes of travel, 15 for parking and a 10 minute cushion.
What does the cushion do?
The cushion is extra time on top of your travel steps so that a delay does not make you miss your target arrival. Set it to 0 if you do not want one.
Does it handle early morning flights?
Yes. If the answer falls before midnight it says the day before, so you can plan the night ahead.
