How this was calculated
  1. 12 month plan: $54,000.00 / (12 x 1) = 4,500, rounded half up to $4,500.00 per paycheck.
  2. 10 month plan: $54,000.00 / (10 x 1) = 5,400, rounded half up to $5,400.00 per paycheck.
  3. Each 10 month paycheck is 12/10 of a 12 month paycheck. To have the same amount in every month, you would hold back about $900.00 from each of them, which is 1/6 of the pay in total.
  • Each paycheck is rounded to the cent, so the yearly total can differ from the salary by a few cents. Your employer sets the pay schedule, the start month and any deductions. Taxes and benefits are not modeled beyond the flat percent you may enter.

How to use the ten month vs twelve month pay calculator

  1. Enter the annual salary.
  2. Choose whether you are paid once or twice a month in a paid month.
  3. In More options, enter a flat percent withheld if you want a take-home estimate. It is your own estimate, not a tax calculation.
  4. Compare the paycheck over 12 months with the paycheck over 10 months, and the difference.

Formula

12 month paycheck = salary / (12 x checks per month)

10 month paycheck = salary / (10 x checks per month)

difference per month = salary / 10 - salary / 12 = salary / 60

Each paycheck is rounded half up to the cent. A 10 month paycheck is 12/10 of a 12 month paycheck, because the same salary is spread over fewer paid months.

A $54,000 salary

Over 12 months, $54,000 / 12 = $4,500.00 a month. Over 10 months, $54,000 / 10 = $5,400.00 a month, which is $900.00 more per paycheck, or $54,000 / 60. Paid twice a month, the checks are $2,250.00 over 12 months and $2,700.00 over 10 months.

To have the same money in all 12 months, you would hold back about $900.00 from each 10 month paycheck. With 20% withheld, the 12 month check leaves $3,600.00 and the 10 month check leaves $4,320.00. The yearly total is the same either way, $54,000 before any withholding.

Why the two schedules exist

Some jobs, such as school work that follows the academic calendar, pay a yearly salary either over the months worked or over all twelve months. The salary does not change. What changes is when the money arrives. A 10 month schedule pays more in each paycheck, with two months that have no pay. A 12 month schedule pays less in each paycheck, but every month has a check.

The choice is mostly about budgeting. If you can set money aside during the 10 paid months, the larger checks cover the empty months. If you prefer steady income, the 12 month schedule does that for you. The page shows the amount to hold back so you can see what the 10 month plan asks of your budget.

Things to check with your employer

Employers set the pay schedule, the months that are paid, how a mid-year start is handled and whether benefits continue in the unpaid months. Taxes and benefit deductions are not modeled, apart from the flat percent you may enter. To turn a salary into hourly, weekly or other pay periods, use the Hourly to Salary Calculator and the Day Rate to Annual Salary Calculator.

For dividing a paycheck among accounts, the Paycheck Split Calculator helps, and the Pay Period Calendar shows how pay days fall across a year.

Assumptions and limits

  • The salary is a yearly figure in dollars and cents. Paychecks are equal within each plan.
  • The 10 month plan assumes exactly 10 equal paid months. A different number of paid months needs different arithmetic.
  • The optional withheld percent is one flat number you choose. It is not a tax estimate.
  • Nothing is stored or uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a paycheck on a 10 month salary?

Divide the annual salary by 10 for a monthly check, or by 20 for a check twice a month. On $54,000 that is $5,400.00 a month. The same salary over 12 months is $4,500.00 a month.

Is a 10 month salary the same as a 12 month salary?

The yearly total is the same. Only the timing differs. A 10 month plan pays larger checks in fewer months, and a 12 month plan pays smaller checks all year.

How much should I save from a 10 month paycheck?

To have the same amount in every month, hold back the difference between the two plans, which is the salary divided by 60 for each monthly check. On $54,000 that is $900.00 a month.

Can I include taxes?

Not exactly. The optional withheld percent applies one flat figure to the gross check, so you can try an estimate. Actual withholding depends on your situation, so use a payroll or tax tool for that.
