How this was calculated
  1. The rotation moves forward by one label on each school day only. Weekends (if skipped) and the no-school dates are shown but do not use up a label.
  2. Starting at label Day 1, each school day takes the next label and wraps from the end of the rotation back to the start.
  • Some schools restart the rotation after long breaks or pause it for testing days. Add those days to the no-school list, or run the page again from the date where the schedule restarts.

Next step

How to use the school day rotation calendar generator

  1. Enter the first day and the last day of the range.
  2. Enter the days in the rotation (2 to 12), the label of the first school day and the label style: Day 1, Day 2 or A, B, C.
  3. Leave Skip weekends ticked for a school week, or untick it if you meet on weekends.
  4. List any no-school dates. The rotation does not advance on those days. Read the calendar, the count of school days and the label that comes next.

Formula

Walk through the range one day at a time, skipping weekends if chosen and the dates you list

Label of a school day = the label of the previous school day plus one, wrapping from the last label back to the first

Next label = the label after the last school day in the range

Days with each label = the count of school days that received it

Because the rotation only advances on school days, a holiday does not skip a label. The same label simply falls on the next school day.

A 6 day rotation with one Monday off

The range runs from 2026-09-07 to 2026-09-25, which has 15 weekdays. The Monday 2026-09-14 is a no-school date, so 14 school days are labeled, starting with Day 1 on 2026-09-07 and with Day 3 coming next after the last day.

Days 1 and 2 appear 3 times each, and Days 3 to 6 appear twice each, for 14 labeled days. If a day of the rotation falls on the holiday in a normal week, it moves to the next school day, and every later label moves with it.

Why schools use rotations

A rotation lets classes meet at different times on different days without tying a subject to a day of the week. Holidays then do not always remove the same class. Families and teachers often need the label for a given date, which is the main use of the calendar.

To plan the periods within a day, see the staggered break schedule generator. To share rides on school days, see the carpool rotation schedule generator.

Keeping it in step with the school

Schools differ on whether the label advances on a partial day, an assembly or a snow day. The page follows the rule that labels advance only on the days you leave as school days. If your school treats a day differently, add the date to the no-school list or remove it. The school calendar is the authority.

To look up holidays to enter as no-school dates, see the US federal holidays calendar.

Assumptions and limits

  • The rotation advances by one label on each school day and wraps around.
  • No-school dates and weekends do not advance the rotation.
  • The calendar covers at most the range allowed on the page. Dates use the YYYY-MM-DD format.
  • Your school sets the rotation, so confirm with its published calendar.

Frequently asked questions

How does a day rotation work?

The days are numbered or lettered in a repeating cycle, such as Day 1 to Day 6, and the cycle moves forward on each school day.

What happens on a holiday?

Nothing advances. The next school day gets the label the holiday would have had.

Can I use A and B days?

Yes. Choose A, B, C labels and set the rotation to 2 for an A and B cycle.

Can I start on a day other than Day 1?

Yes. Enter the label of the first school day in the range, so the calendar picks up where the school is.
