Reverse Text

Paste text and flip it backward by character, by word, by letters in each word, or by line.

Up to 500,000 characters. The result updates as you type.

Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Accented letters and emoji are kept whole when your browser supports character grouping, so a letter with an accent does not split apart. Reversing every character also reverses the line breaks, so the last line comes out first.

How to use the reverse text

  1. Type or paste your text into the first box. The result appears as you type.
  2. Choose how to reverse it: the whole text backward, the word order per line, the letters in each word, or the order of the lines.
  3. Read the result in the second box. Use Copy result to copy it, Download .txt to save it, or Use result as input to reverse it again.
  4. Use Clear to start over. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

The four ways to reverse

The whole text backward reads from the last character to the first, so "Hello, world!" becomes "!dlrow ,olleH" and the last line of a multi-line text comes out first. Word order per line keeps each word as it is and reverses their sequence, so "Hello, world!" becomes "world! Hello,". Extra spaces between words collapse to one in this mode.

Letters in each word spells every word backward in place, so "ab cd" becomes "ba dc" with the spaces kept exactly where they were. Order of the lines flips the lines top to bottom and leaves each line unchanged.

Accents, emoji and languages

A letter with an accent can be stored as two pieces, the letter and the accent mark, and an emoji can be built from several pieces joined together. When your browser supports it, this tool keeps those pieces together, so an accent does not jump onto the wrong letter and a family emoji is not torn apart. Without that support it falls back to reversing whole code points.

Reversal is not a translation: right-to-left languages such as Arabic and Hebrew are stored in reading order, so reversing them puts the letters in the opposite order of how they are read. To check whether a phrase is the same backward, use the palindrome checker.

Limits and privacy

The tool handles up to 500,000 characters. Everything happens in your browser, so your text is not uploaded, stored or logged. Line breaks are treated as a single break whether they came from Windows, Mac or Linux. Other text tools on this site include text cleanup, the case converter and the fancy text generator.

Assumptions and limits

  • The text is processed locally and nothing is uploaded.
  • Text is limited to 500,000 characters.
  • In word order mode, runs of spaces and tabs between words become one space.
  • Reversing does not change the language or meaning of the text, only the order of its characters, words or lines.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reverse text?

Paste it in the first box and choose a mode. The second box updates instantly, and you can copy it or download it as a text file.

What is the difference between reversing words and reversing letters?

Reversing the word order puts the last word first but spells each word normally. Reversing the letters in each word spells each word backward but leaves the words in their original positions.

Does it work with emoji and accented letters?

Yes, in current browsers, which group each visible character before reversing. A letter with an accent stays one unit, and an emoji made from several pieces stays whole.

Can I reverse the result again?

Yes. Use Use result as input to move the result into the first box, then choose another mode or the same one. Reversing the whole text twice gives back the original.
