How to use the report card comment template
- Enter the student's first name, choose their pronouns, and add the subject if the comment is for one.
- Tick the strengths and areas to grow that fit. Each choice becomes one sentence. A few are ticked as an example.
- Optionally add a sentence about the term at the start and one looking ahead at the end.
- Read the comment in the box, edit it to add something specific about the student, then use Copy comment, Print or Download PDF.
Strong effort and a focus goal
For Maya, with the pronouns she and her, ticking Strong effort and Needs focus gives two sentences: "Maya shows strong effort and keeps trying when work becomes difficult. Maya would benefit from staying focused during independent work."
Add Growing reader, a subject of reading, and the opening and closing sentences, and the comment begins "This term in reading, Maya has made steady progress." It then adds "She reads with growing confidence and understanding." and ends with "I look forward to seeing Maya's continued growth next term." With the pronouns they and them, the verbs change too, so "they read" replaces "she reads".
How the comment is built
Each phrase is a complete sentence written for a report card, and the tool fills in the student's name and the pronoun forms. For the pronouns they and them it also switches the verb, so the grammar reads naturally. Sentences come in a steady order: the opening if chosen, then strengths, then areas to grow, then the closing if chosen.
The phrases are deliberately general. A comment is more useful when it also names something real the student did, such as a project or a moment of progress. Treat the generated text as a draft that saves time and keeps the tone kind, then add that detail yourself.
Using the result well
Balance matters. Starting with strengths and presenting growth areas as next steps helps families hear the feedback. Keep to the length your school asks for. The box shows the number of sentences and characters so you can stay within a limit. Check that the comment matches the grade you are recording, using the grade calculator or the GPA calculator for the numbers, and the assignment tracker to keep notes through the term.
Follow your school's guidance about what to include. This tool does not know your policies, a student's needs or any personal circumstances, and it should not replace your judgment.
Privacy
Everything happens in your browser. The name you type and the choices you make are not uploaded. If you tick the box to remember your choices, they stay in this browser only, and you can untick it to delete them. Avoid saving student names on a shared computer.
Assumptions and limits
- The phrases are general and written for a school report. They are drafts for a teacher to review.
- Pronoun forms are he, she or they, and verbs agree with the choice.
- Possessives are written with an apostrophe and an s, as in Maya's.
- Nothing is graded or judged by the tool. The choices are yours.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add my own sentences?
Copy the comment into your report card system and add or change anything you like. The generated text is a starting draft.
How do the pronouns work?
Choose she, he or they. The tool changes the pronouns and the verbs, so with they it writes "they read" and "they are learning" rather than the singular forms.
How long is the comment?
It depends on how many phrases you choose. The box shows the number of sentences and characters so you can fit a limit.
Is the student's name stored anywhere?
Only on your device, and only if you tick Remember. Nothing is sent to a server.
