How to use the placeholder image generator
- Enter the width and height in pixels, or press one of the size buttons.
- Pick the background and text colors and type the text to show. Leave it empty to show the size.
- Choose a file type: PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG.
- Check the preview, then download the image, or copy the SVG code to paste straight into a page.
What a stand-in image is for
A stand-in image takes the place of a real picture while you build a layout, write a document or test a page. A plain colored rectangle with the size written across it shows how much space the final image needs and how the page behaves with an image there. When the real picture is ready, you swap it in.
The SVG file is tiny and scales to any size, so it is a good choice for web work. PNG, JPG and WebP are drawn at the exact pixel size you enter, up to 4,000 by 4,000. A JPG is flattened without transparency, and WebP depends on your browser, so the page tells you if it had to save a PNG instead.
Readable text and sizes
The text is sized to fit the image. It is limited by the height and by the width of the words, with a floor of 8 pixels, so very small images show tiny text. The page also tells you the contrast ratio of your two colors. A ratio below 3 to 1 is flagged because the text may be hard to read. For a deeper check use the color contrast checker.
To choose colors that go together, see the color palette generator. To resize or convert a finished image, use the image resizer, and for checking proportions use the aspect ratio calculator. The size buttons are just common widths and heights to save typing.
Privacy
The image is drawn in your browser. Nothing you type or choose is sent anywhere. Text you enter is escaped before it is placed in the SVG, so it can only appear as text.
Assumptions and limits
- Width and height are whole pixels from 1 to 4,000.
- The text is centered and sized to fit, with a minimum size of 8 pixels.
- JPG has no transparency. WebP saving depends on the browser.
- Contrast is the WCAG ratio between your two colors.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a dummy image of a certain size?
Type the width and height in pixels and download the image. The size is written on it unless you enter other text.
Which file type should I choose?
Use SVG for web pages because it is tiny and scales. Use PNG, JPG or WebP when you need a raster file of an exact pixel size.
Why does the page warn about contrast?
When the text and background colors are too close, the text is hard to read. A ratio below 3 to 1 is flagged.
What is the largest image I can make?
Up to 4,000 by 4,000 pixels. Larger images use a lot of memory in a browser.
