Countdown Timer to Date

Pick a date and time to see a live countdown, then share a link that carries it.

The date, time and name are stored in the link itself, so anyone who opens it sees the same countdown in their own time zone. Nothing is sent to a server.

How to use the countdown timer to date

  1. Optionally type an event name.
  2. Pick the date, and set a time if you want more than the start of the day. The time uses your device clock and time zone.
  3. Watch the live countdown in days, hours, minutes and seconds, with the full date below it.
  4. Choose Copy link to share the countdown. Anyone who opens the link sees the same countdown in their own time zone.

Counting to New Year's Day

From October 16, 2026 to January 1, 2027 is 77 calendar days. The page shows the exact time left, such as 76 days 14:20:05, and a separate line that says 77 calendar days to go by the dates alone. The two differ because the countdown measures elapsed time and the calendar line only compares dates.

A countdown to 9:00 AM on January 1, 2027 shows Friday, January 1, 2027 at 9:00 AM under the numbers. The share link carries the date, the time and the name, so opening it later shows the time left from that moment. After the moment has passed, the same page counts up and says how long ago it was.

How the countdown is figured

The page converts your date and time to a moment on your device, then every fraction of a second subtracts the current time. Because it uses the clock and not a count of ticks, it stays right when the tab is in the background or the device sleeps. Whole days are blocks of 24 hours, and seconds are cut off, never rounded up, so the display reaches zero exactly at the moment.

The calendar-day line compares only the dates, so it ignores daylight saving changes. In a month with a clock change, the exact countdown can show a day count that is one hour off from what you expect, which is correct. For date arithmetic between two dates use the Days Between Dates calculator.

Sharing a countdown

The link holds the date, the time and the event name in its web address. Nothing is stored on a server, so there is nothing to sign up for and nothing to delete. Whoever opens the link sees the same wall-clock moment in their own time zone, so a countdown to 9:00 AM means 9:00 AM for each viewer, not at the same instant.

To count down to a particular year-end moment for everyone at once, pick a time that works in your own zone and tell people the zone. Other countdown pages include the Retirement Countdown Calculator and the Year Progress Calculator.

Assumptions and limits

  • The date and time are read as local time on the device that opens the page.
  • A day is 24 hours of elapsed time in the live countdown.
  • Event names are limited to 60 characters and are shown as plain text.
  • No date is chosen until you pick one, and nothing is sent to a server.

Frequently asked questions

Why do the countdown and the calendar days differ?

The countdown measures exact elapsed time, including the hours left today. The calendar line only compares the dates, so on the morning before an event it can show one more day than the countdown.

Does the countdown work when the tab is in the background?

Yes. It reads the system clock each time it updates, so when you return, the display jumps to the right time. Browsers may update a background tab less often, but the numbers stay correct.

What time zone does the link use?

The device of whoever opens it. The link carries a date and a wall-clock time and not a zone, so each viewer sees the countdown to that time in their own zone.

What happens after the date has passed?

The page says how long ago it was and counts up from the moment. Clear the form or pick a new date to start another countdown.
