How to use the car maintenance schedule printable

      1. List the services you want to track, one per line, as a name, a comma and an interval in miles. The intervals on the form are examples. Use the ones in your owner's manual.
      2. Choose the miles between rows and the last mileage. With 5,000 and 60,000 the page has 12 rows.
      3. Optionally add a vehicle name and tick the option for a service log page.
      4. Print the page. A box marks each mileage where a service comes due, and you write the date and odometer as each job is done.

      Twelve rows of 5,000 miles

With a step of 5,000 and a last mileage of 60,000 the rows are 5,000, 10,000 and so on up to 60,000, which is 12 rows. A service with an interval of 5,000 has a box on all 12 rows. One with 10,000 has 6 boxes, one with 15,000 has 4 boxes (15,000, 30,000, 45,000 and 60,000) and one with 30,000 has 2 boxes.

A mileage is due for a service when the mileage divides evenly by the interval you entered. The shaded squares are the rows where nothing is due for that service.

      Intervals come from you

The page does not know your vehicle. It prints the intervals you type and marks the rows where they fall. The numbers on the form are examples to show how the page works, and they are not recommendations. Maintenance needs differ with the vehicle, the engine, the way it is driven and the conditions, so follow the schedule in your owner's manual and the advice of a qualified mechanic.

Services can be up to 22 characters long and there is room for 8 across the page. If a word is too long for its column, the tool tells you instead of cutting it off.

Mileage rows and the service log

Rows run down the page in mileage steps, with a column for each service, then a place to write the date done and the odometer reading. The optional second page is a service log with blank rows for the date, odometer, work done, cost and shop. Together they give you a plan and a record.

For what a car costs over the years, see the total cost of car ownership calculator, and to log trips, the vehicle mileage log. Everything is made in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored on a server.

      Frequently asked questions

What maintenance intervals should I use?

Use the ones in your owner's manual. The numbers on the form are examples, and this page makes no claim about the right intervals for any vehicle.

How does the page decide where to put a box?

It marks a row when its mileage divides evenly by the service interval you entered. A 10,000 mile interval gets a box at 10,000, 20,000 and so on.

Can I change the mileage steps?

Yes. Set the miles between rows and the last mileage. The page holds up to 24 rows, and it tells you if your choice would need more.

Is there a place to record what was done?

Yes. Each row has a date and odometer column, and the optional service log page has blank rows for the work, the cost and the shop.
