Writing Prompt Generator

Press New prompts for a fresh set of story ideas, or type a seed word to repeat a set you liked.

The same seed always gives the same prompts. Change it for a new set.

Each prompt joins a character, a place, a goal and an obstacle from lists built into the page. Nothing you type leaves your browser, and the seed word is only used to choose from the lists.

How to use the writing prompt generator

    1. Look at the seed word in the box. The same seed always makes the same prompts, so you can come back to a set you liked.
    2. Pick how many prompts you want, from 1 to 10, and choose whether to add a writing twist to each.
    3. Press New prompts for a fresh seed, or type your own word to get its set. The list updates at once.
    4. Copy the prompts or download them as a text file, then pick one and start writing.

    How the prompts are made

Every prompt joins four parts: a character, a place, a goal and an obstacle, all picked from lists of 24 that are built into the page. A twist, from a list of 16, can add a constraint such as "Open in the middle of a conversation" or "Tell it from the point of view of an object". That gives hundreds of thousands of combinations, so you are unlikely to see the same prompt twice by chance.

The seed word is turned into a number, and the number feeds a small random number generator, so choosing the same seed gives the same list. The seed is only used to pick from the lists. Because it is a seed, you can share a word with a friend and both write from the same prompts.

    An example

With the seed "ember" and three prompts, the first is: "A runaway prince in a mountain village after the first snow must deliver a letter before sunrise, but a rival wants the same thing. End on the same line you begin with." The seed "ember" will always start that way, and a different seed will give different prompts.

    Using a prompt well

A prompt is a nudge, not a rule. Change the character, set the story in a different place or ignore the obstacle if a better idea turns up. Short timed bursts of 10 or 15 minutes work well: write without stopping, then see what you have. To plan a longer piece, the Essay Outline Generator helps with structure, the Word Counter tracks length, and the Pages per Day Calculator turns a page goal into a schedule. For help with a different kind of writing, the Resume Keyword Matcher compares your resume with a job posting.

    Assumptions and limits

    • The prompts are made from fixed lists inside the page. No outside text is used and no prompt is checked for originality.
    • A seed always gives the same list for the same number of prompts and the same twist setting.
    • The New prompts button uses your browser's random numbers only to choose a new seed word.
    • Nothing is stored or sent from your browser.

    Frequently asked questions

What does the seed word do?

It decides which items are picked from the lists. The same seed gives the same prompts, so you can repeat a set or share it by sending the word.

How many different prompts are possible?

The four lists of 24 give over 330,000 combinations before a twist, and the 16 twists multiply that by 16.

Can I use the prompts for my own stories or class?

Yes. They are short ideas and you may use them freely for practice, a class, a club or your own writing.

Why do I get the same prompts after I reload?

The page opens with the seed "ember", so the first set is always the same. Press New prompts or type another seed to see different ones.
