White, Pink and Brown Noise Generator

Play steady background noise with a volume control and a timer.

Loud sound can damage hearing. Start with the volume low and raise it slowly to a level that is comfortable. If you play noise for a baby or a pet, keep it quiet and at a distance, and ask their doctor or vet if you are unsure.

Sound starts only when you press Play.

  • White noise has equal energy at every frequency, so it sounds bright and hissy.
  • Pink noise is filtered white noise with less high pitch, like steady rain. It is an approximation of a 1/f spectrum.
  • Brown noise is lower still, like a distant rumble. It is white noise added up over time.

The noise is made in your browser with the Web Audio API and repeats a 6 second clip, which is not noticeable in noise. Nothing is recorded or uploaded. If you hear nothing, check the volume of your device.

How to use the white, pink and brown noise generator

  1. Choose white, pink or brown noise.
  2. Keep the volume low to start, and optionally set a timer to stop the sound.
  3. Press Play. Sound starts only when you press the button. Press Stop whenever you want it to end.
  4. Raise the volume slowly to a comfortable level. You can change the type while it plays.

The three kinds of noise

White noise has equal energy at every frequency, so it sounds bright and hissy, like a radio between stations. Pink noise has less energy at high frequencies and sounds softer, a little like steady rain. Brown noise has even more low frequencies and sounds like a deep rumble or a distant waterfall.

Pink noise here is white noise run through a standard filter that approximates the 1/f shape, and brown noise is white noise added up over time, which falls off faster. They are approximations, so they differ slightly from laboratory definitions. People use noise to cover distracting sounds when they work, study or sleep, and which kind helps depends on the person.

Listening safely

Loud sound can damage hearing, and noise is easy to leave on for hours. Start with the volume low, raise it slowly, and keep it at a comfortable level. If you play noise for a baby or a pet, keep it quiet and across the room, and ask their doctor or vet if you are unsure. The volume slider here starts low, and the sound fades in rather than starting with a click.

The timer, which counts with the clock rather than with ticks, stops the sound after the time you pick, up to 8 hours. For other timing tools see the online timer, the Pomodoro timer and the sleep cycle calculator. The decibel calculator explains sound levels.

How it works

The noise is generated in your browser with the Web Audio API. A clip of about 6 seconds is created from random numbers and played in a loop, and nothing is recorded or uploaded. Browsers require a click before they play sound, so nothing plays when the page loads. If you hear nothing, check the volume on your device and make sure the tab is not muted.

Assumptions and limits

  • Sound starts only after you press Play and stops when you press Stop or the timer ends.
  • Pink and brown noise are approximations made by filtering white noise.
  • The clip is about 6 seconds long and loops.
  • The timer runs up to 8 hours and uses the clock.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between white, pink and brown noise?

White noise is bright and hissy, pink noise has less high pitch and sounds like rain, and brown noise is deeper still, like a distant rumble.

Is it safe to leave noise on all night?

Loud sound can harm hearing, so keep the volume at a comfortable level and ask a professional if you are unsure. Use the timer if you do not want it to run for hours.

Why does the sound not start by itself?

Browsers block sound until you interact with the page. Press Play to begin.

Does it work offline or in the background?

The page makes the sound on your own device, so it needs no connection once it has loaded. Whether sound keeps playing when a screen locks depends on your device and browser.
