How to use the steps to miles converter
- Choose steps to distance or miles to steps, then enter the number.
- Enter your height and the sex setting used for the height multiplier, or type your own measured step length to override the estimate.
- Read the distance in miles and kilometers, or the number of steps, along with your steps per mile.
- Use the table to see what common step goals, such as 5,000 or 10,000 steps, equal in distance at your step length.
Formula
Step length (inches) = height (inches) x 0.413 for women or 0.415 for men
Steps per mile = 63,360 inches / step length in inches
Distance in miles = steps x step length / 63,360
1 mile = 63,360 inches = 1.609344 kilometers
The two multipliers are widely quoted rules of thumb that treat step length as a fixed fraction of height. They are population averages and vary with pace, terrain and shoes. Entering your own measured step length is more accurate.
Worked example
A woman who is 5 ft 6 in (66 in) tall has an estimated step length of 66 x 0.413 = 27.258 in. That gives 63,360 / 27.258 = 2,324 steps per mile.
10,000 steps cover 10,000 x 27.258 / 63,360 = 4.30 miles (6.92 kilometers).
If you instead measure a step length of 30 in, a mile takes 2,112 steps. For men the multiplier is 0.415, so the same 66 in gives 27.4 in per step.
Step, stride and why labels differ
Some sources call this number a stride length and others call it a step length. A step is one foot strike to the next, and a stride is two steps. The multipliers here are applied as a step length, which matches how pedometers count steps, so the distance for a given step count is steps times step length.
Measuring your own step length
The most accurate approach is to measure.
- Mark a known distance, such as 100 feet, on a flat path.
- Walk it at your normal pace and count your steps.
- Divide the distance in inches by the number of steps. For example, 1,200 inches in 48 steps is 25 inches per step.
- Enter that value in the step length field. Running and fast walking give longer steps than a stroll.

Assumptions and limits
- The height-based step length is an estimate from a rule of thumb. Real step length changes with speed, terrain, footwear and stride habits.
- The 0.413 and 0.415 multipliers are conventions, shown as estimates. They are not clinical measurements.
- Fitness trackers may count steps and distance differently, so your device total can disagree with this arithmetic.
- Steps must be a whole number up to 100,000,000. Measured step length must be between 6 and 60 inches (15 to 150 cm).
- Nothing you enter leaves your browser. This is general information, not medical advice.
Frequently asked questions
How many steps are in a mile?
It depends on your step length. For a woman who is 5 ft 6 in tall, the height rule gives about 2,324 steps per mile. A taller person takes fewer steps, and a faster pace usually lengthens each step.
How far is 10,000 steps?
About 4.3 miles (6.9 kilometers) for a woman who is 5 ft 6 in tall using the height rule. With a measured 30 inch step it is 4.7 miles. The exact distance depends on your own step length.
Where do the 0.413 and 0.415 numbers come from?
They are widely repeated rule-of-thumb multipliers of height for women and men. They are averages for a population, so use them as a starting point and replace them with a measurement when you can.
Why does my watch show a different distance?
Watches and phones may use GPS, a calibrated stride or sensors, and they update their estimates as they learn. This tool uses one fixed step length for the whole total, so small differences are expected.
Can I convert miles to steps?
Yes. Switch the first option to miles to steps, enter the distance and the page multiplies by your steps per mile.
