How to use the smoothie calorie calculator
- Choose whether your ingredient amounts are in grams or ounces.
- List each ingredient with its amount and its calories per 100 grams. The starting rows use rounded example values; replace them with the numbers from your own packages.
- Enter how many servings the blend makes.
- Read the total calories, the calories per serving and per 100 g, and the share each ingredient contributes. Copy, Print or export the CSV.
Formula
ingredient calories = grams x calories per 100 g / 100
total = sum of all ingredients
per serving = total / servings
per 100 g of blend = total / total grams x 100
Ounces are converted at 28.349523125 grams. Calories means kilocalories. Liquids such as milk are entered by weight, where one milliliter of milk is close to one gram.
A banana, strawberry, yogurt and milk blend
With the example rows, 120 g of banana at 89 per 100 g is 106.8, 100 g of strawberries at 32 is 32.0, 150 g of yogurt at 61 is 91.5, 200 g of milk at 61 is 122.0 and 16 g of peanut butter at 588 is 94.1.
The total is 446.38 calories, shown as 446, across 586 g of ingredients. That is about 76 calories per 100 g of blend, and 223 calories per serving if the blend makes two.
Getting the inputs right
Use the calories per 100 grams printed on each package, or from a nutrition database you trust, for the product you actually use. Brands differ, ripeness changes fruit slightly, and a heaped spoon of nut butter weighs more than a level one. Weighing on a kitchen scale gives better results than counting cups.
Ice and water add volume without calories, so you can leave them out. If you want the blend to look the same as the calories you drink, include everything that has calories, such as honey, protein powder and seeds.
Using the share column
The share column shows which ingredient carries the most calories. Often a small amount of something dense, like nut butter, accounts for a bigger share than a large fruit. If you want to change the total, that is the first place to look.
To work out the cost of the same recipe, use the recipe cost calculator, and to make a larger batch, the recipe scaler. This page is general information and not nutrition or medical advice.
Assumptions and limits
- The calorie figures are the ones you enter. The page does not look up foods and the example values are rounded and made up for illustration.
- Calories per 100 grams can be from 0 to 900. Servings must be a whole number from 1 to 100.
- Blank rows are ignored. A row with only some boxes filled is flagged.
- Nothing is stored or uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
How many calories are in my smoothie?
Add up the calories of each ingredient: grams times calories per 100 grams, divided by 100. The calculator does this for every row and adds them. The total depends on the figures you enter.
Do I count ice and water?
Plain ice and water add no calories, so you can leave them out. Include anything else that has calories, such as juice, honey, protein powder or seeds.
Can I enter amounts in cups?
The calculator works in grams or ounces because weight is more accurate than volume. A kitchen scale makes this easy, and the grams to cups converter on this site can help you convert.
Why is my store-bought smoothie different?
Commercial recipes use different ingredients, juices and sweeteners, and portion sizes vary. Enter its ingredients if you know them, or use the label on the bottle.
