How to use the seconds to time converter
- Choose Seconds to time to turn a count of seconds into a clock reading, or Time to seconds to go the other way.
- Type the seconds. Decimals are kept to three places, so 59.999 stays 59.999. For the other direction, fill in hours, minutes and seconds; blank boxes count as zero.
- Read the h:mm:ss clock format first. Hours keep counting past 24, because whole days are shown separately as days, hours, minutes and seconds.
- Use the totals in minutes, hours and days when you need a single unit, then copy the result, print it or download the CSV.
Formula
Hours = whole seconds / 3600, rounded down
Minutes = (seconds left after the hours) / 60, rounded down
Seconds = what is left
Total seconds = hours x 3600 + minutes x 60 + seconds
Fractions of a second are rounded to the nearest millisecond before anything is split. Days are hours divided by 24 and are shown next to, not taken out of, the clock hours.
100,000 seconds as a clock time
Divide 100,000 by 3,600 to get 27.78, so there are 27 whole hours, which use 97,200 seconds. That leaves 2,800 seconds. Divide by 60 to get 46 whole minutes (2,760 seconds), which leaves 40 seconds. The clock reading is 27:46:40, or 1 day 3 hours 46 minutes 40 seconds.
The same moment is 1,666.6667 minutes, 27.777778 hours or 1.157407 days. A second case: 3,661.5 seconds is 01:01:01.5, one hour, one minute and one and a half seconds. And 86,400 seconds is exactly 24:00:00, which is 1 day.
Why the hours can be larger than 24
A clock face resets after 24 hours, but a duration does not. A movie that runs 100 minutes, a server that has been up for 100,000 seconds and a long hike all need a reading that simply keeps counting. The h:mm:ss line keeps all the hours together so it can be pasted into a spreadsheet or a video editor, while the days line breaks the same total into days for people.

Where counts of seconds show up
Many tools report time as plain seconds: video and audio lengths, timeouts, stopwatch exports, log files, game timers and API settings. Reading 4,500 seconds as 1:15:00 takes a moment of mental division, and mistakes are easy when the number has a fraction. - A day is exactly 24 hours of 3,600 seconds. Daylight saving changes and leap seconds are not modeled.
- Seconds are rounded to the nearest thousandth before splitting, and totals are shown to the precision stated beside each line.
- Negative durations are not accepted. Enter the size of the gap and decide for yourself whether it is before or after.
- Everything is calculated in your browser, and nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert seconds to hours, minutes and seconds by hand?
Divide the seconds by 3,600 and keep the whole number as hours. Take the seconds that are left, divide by 60 and keep the whole number as minutes. What remains is the seconds. For 3,725 seconds that is 1 hour, 2 minutes and 5 seconds.
Why does the clock format show more than 24 hours?
It is a duration, not a time of day. Keeping the hours together, as in 27:46:40, makes the result easy to paste into a sheet or a video tool. The days line shows the same total split into days.
Can I enter fractions of a second?
Yes, up to three decimal places, which is milliseconds. A value like 0.0004 rounds to zero milliseconds, and 59.9996 rounds up to a full minute.
Is a minute of video the same as 60 seconds here?
Yes. The converter counts exactly 60 seconds in a minute and 3,600 in an hour. Video frame rates and time codes with drop frames use their own rules and are not part of this page.
